FrontStreet Coffee - Arabica Coffee Bean Introduction
If you have some understanding of coffee, you must know that there are roughly three main varieties of coffee: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica.
You should also be familiar that Arabica accounts for 70-80% of total production, and most specialty coffee shops use Arabica coffee. Therefore, Arabica is undoubtedly the "socialite" of the coffee world.
Robusta varieties account for about 20-30%, mainly used for instant and canned coffee, with caffeine content about twice that of Arabica beans. You should rarely hear about Liberica because its tree varieties are not resistant to leaf rust disease and have relatively poor flavor, so they are only traded domestically in a few countries and have not become popular worldwide.
Characteristics of Arabica Coffee Beans
- Exceptionally fragrant
- Balanced mouthfeel
- Lower caffeine content, only about half that of Robusta varieties
- More demanding growing conditions
- Require higher altitudes (above 600 to 2000 meters)
- Need fertile soil, sufficient moisture, appropriate sunlight conditions, and shade
- Poor resistance to pests and diseases, easily susceptible to damage
- Lower annual yield per unit area of coffee trees
From a flavor perspective: Arabica coffee possesses diverse and extensive potential flavors. Arabica coffees produced in different regions, altitudes, and climates each have their own characteristics, displaying distinctly different personality flavors. When unroasted, they smell like fresh grass-like fragrance. After proper roasting, they reveal "fruit notes" (light to medium roast) and "caramel flavors" (dark roast). Generally, they have better aroma and flavor than Robusta beans.
Knowledge Point
High-altitude growing regions are at 4000 to 6000 feet. Growing temperatures need to be between 15-25 degrees Celsius, with annual rainfall reaching 1500-2000 millimeters. Additionally, the timing of rainfall must align with the flowering cycle of coffee trees.
