FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Kenyan Coffee Grades

Kenyan coffee quality control is extremely strict, managed by the official unit "Coffee Board of Kenya" (CBK) established by the Kenyan government. Founded in 1933, it holds regular auction meetings at the coffee exchange in the capital Nairobi. The government-coordinated auction system is based on a grading system that uses "bean size," weight, and shape appearance as the main basis for auction prices.

Kenya classifies coffee beans by "size" and shape into AA, AB, C, E, PB, TT, T, ML, and MH grades. These grades primarily distinguish bean shape and size, but do not absolutely represent bean quality. Many people believe that larger beans contain more aromatic oils that produce coffee fragrance, and because of this, larger beans are more expensive in the market. Taking Kenyan AA as an example, among beans of the same grade, the highest grade is estate beans, followed by regular AA. AB grading follows AA, C grade is for smaller beans, E grade is extra-large elephant beans, while TT, T, ML, and MH are local non-premium beans.

As for quality distinction, Kenya uses a numerical grading system to differentiate coffee quality, but this numerical grading method hasn't been promoted much in China, so fewer people know about it. Therefore, grading still prioritizes larger beans, while PB grade with different shapes is equivalent to AA, but if it's estate grade, it advances two or one levels in the grading. For example, AB estate beans are equivalent to AA and PB.

Kenya can be called a model student among coffee-producing countries. No country in the world values producing high-quality coffee like Kenya does. All Kenyan coffee must be uniformly purchased and cup-tested by the government-established "Coffee Board of Kenya (CBK)" after harvesting, and samples are sent to buyers. At auctions held in the capital Nairobi, coffee buyers from around the world bid according to the sample quality they receive, with the highest bidder winning.

The government-coordinated auction system encourages over 10,000 small-scale coffee farmers throughout Kenya, because as long as they have good quality, they can easily get good prices. In fact, the Kenyan government's efforts go beyond this. The government also provides numerous small coffee farmers with techniques for growing good coffee, guides hundreds of farmer cooperatives in better green bean processing, and CBK invests efforts in coffee industry production, quality research, sales, and even financial guidance. All this has created the unparalleled charm of Kenyan coffee and the enthusiastic love from coffee connoisseurs around the world.

Knowledge Point:

Hand-picked coffee cherries, after manual sorting to remove unripe and overripe defects, are pulped, fermented for about 36 hours, then sun-dried on metal mesh racks. After processing at the mill to remove the parchment, they become charming Kenyan green beans with blue-green appearance. These beautiful green beans are graded according to size, shape, and weight.
