FrontStreet Coffee - Colombia Huila Coffee Introduction

Huila, located in western Colombia, where most coffee grows in the western coastal mountain range and eastern mountain range. The fertile volcanic soil and moderate rainfall allow coffee trees to grow at altitudes up to 1,900 meters. This region consists mostly of small farmers who produce quite distinctive specialty coffee beans.

In recent years, with the international market's emphasis on coffee quality and the demand for specialty coffee, there has been a shift to micro-regional selections. Several small farmers provide their individual harvests, which are then consolidated into small batches for sale. This approach allows for better quality control and creates more opportunities to select specific micro-region small farmer coffees with excellent quality through batch-by-batch coffee cupping. This coffee features rich aroma, is quite smooth and mellow, with a hint of berry acid that balances the overall flavor profile, adding even more character. It's quite suitable as a gentle, non-stimulating flavor during breakfast.

This coffee comes from the Colombia Huila producing region. Some merchants translate it as "Huilan," "Uila," or "Hula," but these are all transliterations of Huila. Named after its national region, Colombia Huila grows on the canyon slopes of the Huila region in South America, at altitudes between 1,400-1,800 meters. The climate not only keeps cold winds out but also provides cooling mountain breezes without high temperatures. Additionally, rainfall is quite abundant, the air is fresh, the climate is pleasant, and it's like spring all year round.

Colombian coffee workers manually harvest coffee beans (also known as coffee cherries) in the mountains, allowing for careful selection of the most mature and full fruits. Most coffee beans are processed using the washed method: first removing the peel and pulp of the coffee fruit, then soaking the beans in water tanks for fermentation, followed by washing with clean water and drying. Washed coffees typically have pure flavors, bright mouthfeel, and pleasant acidity, reducing some of the flavor defects found in natural process coffees. When brewed after medium roasting, it has a light, silky texture, sometimes with a hint of acidity, unlike the strong flavors of Brazilian coffee and Italian Espresso. In Colombia, it's hailed as "green gold."

Therefore, the coffee beans grown in Huila have a full-bodied taste with a relatively heavy texture.

Huila coffee, with its nutty, chocolate, caramel aromas and smooth, pleasant fruit acidity, is recognized as specialty coffee. This is not only due to its uniquely superior geographical conditions and the selection of Arabica varieties but also the contribution of careful manual picking and selection.

Knowledge point: Coffee from Colombia's Nariño (also known as Naling) region is named "Colombia Nariño" because it comes from Nariño.
