FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Kenyan Coffee

Kenyan coffee is a pure, additive-free coffee with strong, natural fruity acidity that evokes notes of citrus and cherry. It boasts a rich body and beautiful balance, renowned in the coffee world for its rich, intense aroma, refreshing multi-layered acidity, full silky body, and subtle red wine flavor, making it highly sought after.

Kenyan coffee's abundant aroma features excellent medium purity with a crisp, refreshing mouthfeel. Delicate fruity acidity glides across the tongue, delivering a fresh flavor profile.

Kenya's coffee production areas are mainly concentrated in the plateau regions represented by Mount Kenya (with an average altitude of 1500-2100 meters). The suitable year-round temperatures combined with acidic red volcanic soil create the ideal growing conditions for producing the finest Kenyan coffee.

Kenyan coffee is typically hand-picked. Freshly harvested coffee cherries are promptly transported to cooperative washing stations, where washed and dried coffee is delivered to cooperatives as "parchment coffee" (beans covered with the inner skin). These fresh coffee beans create the superior quality of Kenyan coffee.

The coffee industry occupies a very important position in Kenya. All Kenyan coffee beans are first acquired by the Coffee Board of Kenya (CBK), where they undergo evaluation and grading before being sold at weekly auctions.

The highest coffee grade is Peaberry (PB), followed by AA++, AA+, AA, AB, and so on. Premium coffee beans have a bright luster, delicious flavor, and a subtle wine-like aroma.

Kenya's coffee-producing regions are most famous for seven major areas: Thika, Kirinyaga, Mt. Kenya West, Nyeri, Kiambu, Ruiri, and Muranga.

Among these, the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range serve as the main production areas.

After harvest, all Kenyan coffee must be uniformly acquired by the government-established "Coffee Board of Kenya (CBK)" for cupping and grade differentiation. Coffee grades are distinguished by "bean size," classified according to size, shape, and weight.
