FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Costa Rican Coffee

Costa Rica has a mild climate with rainy mountainous regions and fertile volcanic soil, creating the perfect environment for coffee growth. In addition to these excellent growing conditions, the Costa Rican government had the foresight to vigorously develop coffee cultivation in the early 19th century. To date, Costa Rican coffee has surpassed cocoa, tobacco, and sugar to become an important economic crop and main source of government revenue.

In 1821, the San José municipal government distributed coffee seedlings to neighbors for free; later, it also introduced preferential policies such as granting land after five years of coffee cultivation. This series of policies made it the first country in Central and South America to establish a complete coffee industry. One-third of Costa Rica's population is engaged in coffee-related industries, making coffee an inseparable part of the country.

Due to its high latitude and high altitude geographical factors, Costa Rican coffee benefits from large temperature variations between day and night, resulting in rich flavor compounds with good acidity that is also gentle and balanced. The local volcanic soil is very fertile and has good drainage, providing the essential conditions for high-quality coffee.

Although Costa Rica ranks third from the bottom in terms of land area among Central American countries, its extreme emphasis on coffee industry development has enabled Costa Rica to possess coffee cultivation and processing techniques that cannot be surpassed by major coffee-producing countries worldwide.

The Renowned Honey Processing Method

What is honey processing? It involves removing the fruit skin while leaving the golden mucilage to accompany the coffee beans. By continuously controlling factors such as fermentation time, this method creates more unique coffee flavors while imparting excellent sweetness, giving the coffee both the color and taste reminiscent of honey.

Knowledge Point: Costa Rica's volcanic soil is very fertile and has good drainage. It was the first country in Central America to grow coffee and bananas for commercial value. Coffee and bananas are the country's main export commodities.
