FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Geisha Coffee Varieties
The Geisha variety originated in Ethiopia. In 1931, scientists discovered it near the town of Gesha in southwestern Ethiopia, naming it after its discovery location. Today, it's commonly spelled as "Geisha" in the coffee world. Subsequently, for experimental purposes, small quantities were planted in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. In the 1950s, Geisha coffee crossed the Atlantic from Tanzania to Costa Rica, becoming a research subject at the CATIE Coffee Research Center. In 1963, Geisha was brought to Panama.
Geisha is an Arabica coffee variety originating from Geisha Mountain in southwestern Ethiopia. In Chinese, it's transliterated as "瑰夏" (Guīxià); because the Japanese pronunciation of "geisha" is similar to Geisha, it's called "艺妓咖啡" (geisha coffee) in Japan. The Geisha variety has beautiful narrow leaves, and its fruit and green beans are also slightly longer compared to other Arabica coffees. It's sensitive to growing conditions, exhibiting excellent flavor profiles when grown at high altitudes, but yields are low.
Geisha is a very fragile plant:
Compared to other coffee varieties, its leaf surface system is very thin, which means its photosynthesis efficiency is far lower than other varieties. Most importantly, its root system is also fragile, which reduces water and energy intake. A Geisha coffee tree produces only half the coffee beans that the Catuai variety produces.
The most critical factor for quality Geisha is planting altitude:
This variety needs to be planted at higher altitudes. In Panama, the best Geisha must be grown above 1,700 meters, and some estates like Elida Estate plant Geisha at 1,700-1,950 meters.
Geisha green coffee beans have a beautiful blue-green color with a jade-like warm texture. They smell of fresh grass, peaches, berries, and possess the unique milk-sweet aroma of oolong tea that most coffee beans lack.
Floral notes, tropical fruits, intense sweetness... these are the sensations that Geisha has always brought us. With proper roasting, they give you the feeling of sipping the fragrance of a bouquet of fresh flowers.
Knowledge Point: Arabica is one of the two very important varieties in the commercial coffee industry, with the other important variety being Robusta.
