FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to the Laurina Coffee Variety
Another variety of "Arabica" is "Bourbon". In the 17th century, the French smuggled 60 coffee seedlings from Yemen to the French Bourbon Island for cultivation. In the end, only two seedlings survived, which became the original "Round Bourbon" that was first spread.
In the early 18th century, a mutant variety of "Round Bourbon" was discovered on Bourbon Island. The plants and leaves were smaller, the coffee beans were more pointed and slender, and the caffeine content was lower. It was hailed as a semi-decaffeinated "Laurina" (Pointed Bourbon). Due to the difficulty of cultivation, Laurina is now the most expensive coffee variety in the world.
In the mid-to-late 18th century, Brazil introduced Bourbon and hybridized it with Red Top Typica to increase the disease resistance of the seedlings. The Bourbon variety began to take root and flourish in South America.
After the 19th century, French missionaries introduced coffee seeds from Bourbon Island to countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. On the East African land beyond Ethiopia, the Bourbon variety was once again bred and propagated.
Two ancient varieties, "Typica" and "Bourbon," have been cultivated and refined in different soils and waters of the New World for several hundred years, gradually evolving into numerous variants and hybrid varieties. They can be simply divided into four major categories: the "Typica variant series," the "Bourbon variant series," the "intraspecific hybrid series" under Arabica, and the "interspecific hybrid series" resulting from hybridization between Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica.
Bourbon coffee fruits have a distinct sour and fragrant aroma, with more noticeable milky and incense cedar fragrances than Typica, and a broader flavor spectrum than Typica. Bourbon has many variants around the world. "Caturra" discovered in Brazil is a Bourbon variant that grows at high altitudes. The higher the altitude, the lower the yield, but the better the flavor. "Pacas" is another dwarf Bourbon variant discovered in El Salvador, which does not require high cultivation altitudes and can grow well at 600-1000 meters with excellent flavor. Villa Sarchi and Villa Lobos also belong to dwarf Bourbon variants. The Yemen Mocha coffee, with its short trees and small, exquisite coffee beans, also belongs to the Bourbon variant.
Knowledge Point
Caturra has strong adaptability and does not require shade trees. It can thrive in direct exposure to the scorching sun, earning it the name "Sun Coffee." It can adapt to high-density cultivation but requires more fertilization, which increases costs. Therefore, it was not widely accepted by coffee farmers in the early stages.
