FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Lao Coffee
According to 2002 data from the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD), Lao coffee beans are among the twelve best coffee beans in the world.
The beverage with charming aroma produced in the Bolaven Plateau, like Lao beer, has become a national product with unique charm that "originated from other countries but developed its own excellence."
Lao's coffee history can be traced back a century. French colonists experimented with planting various crops in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. The unique natural environment allowed Lao coffee to reveal the kingly demeanor of top-tier Southeast Asian coffee. Robusta and Arabica coffee became the most profitable cash crops after opium.
Currently, 65% of the world's coffee is Arabica, while Lao's Bolaven Plateau grows the world's finest Arabica coffee trees. The mild climate, humid air, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil make the Bolaven Plateau a paradise for coffee cultivation. This land is considered the treasure ground most suitable for coffee cultivation in Southeast Asia.
In a coffee workshop along Highway 13 in Champasak Province, we found the "most Lao" coffee. High-quality Arabica coffee beans, after simple processing such as roasting and grinding, are immediately sold, maximizing the preservation of the original taste of Bolaven Arabica.
Lao coffee cultivation has about a century of history, initially introduced by the French; due to special volcanic geology and climate, it has created exceptionally flavorful coffee.
The Bolaven Plateau in Champasak Province, southwestern Lao, produces 95% of the country's coffee; the mild climate, humid air, and nutrient-rich volcanic soil make this land a paradise for coffee growers.
Lao coffee exports rank first in ASEAN, followed by Vietnam in second place and Thailand in third. Coffee has become the largest source of income from Lao's agricultural product exports.
