FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to the Three Major Coffee Varieties
Arabica
Coffee beans with first-class flavor and aroma
Arabica originated in Ethiopia and is also produced in South Africa, African countries, Asian nations, and other regions, accounting for 70% of the world's coffee production. Arabica has relatively weak resistance to pests and diseases, making highland areas more suitable for cultivation. Arabica coffee beans grown at elevations above 1,500 meters produce the best quality.
Such meticulously produced high-quality beans have a balanced taste and aroma, making them considered premium coffee beans, mainly used for single-origin or specialty coffees. The three famous coffee beans—Hawaiian Kona, Jamaican Blue Mountain, and Yemen Mocha—all belong to the Arabica variety. Arabica green beans have a dark, narrow appearance and are characterized by rich flavors including sweetness, acidity, and aroma.
Robusta
Strong acidity and intense flavor
Robusta originates from the Congo in Africa and accounts for 30% of global coffee production. The name Robusta literally means "robust" or "resilient." In fact, this coffee tree not only has strong resistance to pests and diseases but can survive in any soil and even grow in wild conditions. Therefore, it can also be cultivated in high-temperature regions, with fast growth and easy cultivation, offering the advantage of low prices. It is mainly used for blending or as the main ingredient in instant coffee. Some Robusta varieties produced in India, Africa, and Brazil have strong acidity, high caffeine content, and a richer flavor.
Robusta beans have a plump oval appearance, with green beans that are light brown or yellowish-brown with grass-green and yellow luster. Compared to the Arabica variety, they have a more fragrant but lighter taste, characterized by less prominent acidity and stronger bitterness.
Knowledge Point
However, due to lower production volume or often poor quality, Liberica is basically unsuitable for commercial use.
