FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to the Three Major Coffee Varieties

There are three original coffee species: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. Due to flavor and cultivation reasons, only the first two—Arabica and Robusta—are circulated in the market, with a market share ratio of approximately 70:30.

These three original species have been spread to different producing regions worldwide, developing distinct flavor variations. Just like apples, the taste and variety of apples differ in each province in China, and there are significant differences between domestic and foreign varieties.

Caffeine Content Comparison

The caffeine content of Arabica is basically only half that of Robusta, and its flavor and mouthfeel also have significant advantages over Robusta.

Before understanding your reaction to caffeine, you should adopt a more conservative attitude. Moreover, as you age, safe dosage limits differ across age groups. Just because Arabica has lower caffeine content than Robusta doesn't mean you should recklessly consume large cups.

Flavor Comparison

Arabica is typically considered "high-quality" coffee beans because of its rich taste and lack of the intense bitterness found in Robusta beans. Many producers specifically label their roasted coffee beans as 100% Arabica to highlight their quality.

Because Arabica coffee produced in different regions, at different altitudes, and in different climates usually has unique characteristics, it can display distinctly regional flavor personalities. After proper roasting, the fruity aroma and caramel sweetness generally provide better aroma and flavor than Robusta beans.

Robusta typically has a more one-dimensional and pungent flavor. Most is planted in low-altitude areas, and flavor variations from different regions and climates are not significant, lacking regional personality. After deep roasting, low-value Robusta beans often taste like rubber tires, making it difficult to showcase delicate flavors.

Red Catuai is considered a natural hybrid of Red Bourbon and Typica, possessing the bright acidity and charming aroma of Typica, along with nutty flavors.

Knowledge Point

Coffee beans are the form that most completely preserves coffee flavor, ensuring coffee freshness and original taste.
