FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Asian Coffee Flavors from the World's Three Major Coffee Regions

Main Coffee Growing Regions and Their Characteristics

1. Latin American Coffee

Characterized by cocoa and nutty flavors, with low acidity and high body. Coffee beans from this region have lively yet mild flavors, and their refined taste makes them highly regarded.

2. African/Arabian Coffee

Featuring citrus and floral notes in coffee beans, with higher acidity and lower body. This is where coffee originated, and coffee produced in these regions has captivating flavors.

3. Asian/Pacific Coffee

Characterized by earthy aromas and spice notes, with moderate acidity and body. Coffee produced here has a long history and is full of earthy character, making it an extremely popular coffee variety.

When mentioning Asian coffee, coffee enthusiasts' first impression is often of richness and depth. The general characteristics of Asian coffee are rich flavors, strong and rounded sweetness, but the aroma and brightness appear somewhat subdued.

Green beans are generally processed using wet or semi-wet methods. The green beans are mostly uniform in size, though semi-wet processed beans tend to be darker in color. When making espresso blends, Asian coffee is excellent as a base.

The most important coffee growing region in mainland China is Yunnan Province. It was first cultivated in Binchuan and later expanded to Dehong Prefecture in the southwest. Traces of Yunnan coffee can be found in several major cities such as Baoshan, Mangshi, and Tengchong.

Thanks to its unique geographical environment and climate conditions, Yunnan coffee has developed a distinctive flavor that is rich but not bitter, aromatic but not overwhelming, with a hint of fruitiness. World-class coffee experts have evaluated it as the best coffee in the world, and its cultivation techniques and yield per unit are also world-class.

Knowledge Point

Coffee from different growing regions has its own flavor characteristics. However, coffees from the same major region share certain commonalities with each other.
