FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee and Blue Mountain Style Coffee Introduction

Jamaica Blue Mountain - Since 90% of Blue Mountain coffee is exported to Japan, in earlier years, 99.9% of Blue Mountain coffee available domestically was simply grown near the Blue Mountains. Only coffee produced in the 6,000 hectares of land above 1,600 meters in altitude can be called authentic Jamaica Blue Mountain.

In Nagoya, FrontStreet Coffee was delighted to discover a coffee bean supplier still using charcoal roasting with No. 1 Blue Mountain beans. Because this roasting method places great demands on the roaster's knowledge, experience, and fire control, it's quite rare nowadays. Charcoal roasting allows each coffee bean to pass evenly through the fire, resulting in a smoother taste, heavier aftertaste, and maintained flavor even after cooling. This makes it perfectly suitable for higher-acidity beans like Blue Mountain. In earlier years, Japan preferred using flannel to brew Blue Mountain coffee, savoring the original taste of Blue Mountain - rich, mellow texture with a persistent sweet aftertaste. Nowadays, FrontStreet Coffee uses pour-over methods to brew their Blue Mountain coffee, offering a different flavor profile that FrontStreet Coffee recommends coffee enthusiasts try.

Jamaica has three coffee varieties: Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, Jamaica High Mountain Coffee, and Jamaica Prime Coffee.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

Among these, Blue Mountain coffee is divided into 7 grades. From highest to lowest quality, they are: No. 1 beans (17-18 screen), No. 2 beans (16 screen), No. 3 beans (15 screen), Peaberry (beans above 10 screen), Blended (mixture of No. 1, 2, and 3 beans), Triages (sample beans below 15 screen), and Mixed Peaberry. According to CIB (Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica) standards, only coffee grown at altitudes between 3,000-5,500 feet in the Blue Mountains can be defined as Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, while coffee from other regions can only be called Jamaica High Mountain Coffee.

The CIB also has strict definitions for the Blue Mountain region where Blue Mountain coffee can be produced:

Jamaica High Mountain Coffee

Coffee produced below 3,000 feet in the Jamaica Blue Mountain region is called High Mountain Coffee (Jamaica High Mountain Supreme Coffee Beans). It's second only to Blue Mountain coffee in quality and is known in the industry as the sibling variety to Blue Mountain coffee.

Jamaica Prime Coffee

Coffee grown outside the Blue Mountain region is called Jamaica Prime Coffee (Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans).

Blue Mountain Style Coffee

Blue Mountain Style coffee is actually so-called "Blue Mountain Blend" and has no connection to authentic Blue Mountain. Since over 90% of Blue Mountain coffee is sold to Japan, many "Blue Mountain coffees" sold in Chinese cafes are undoubtedly fake. This situation arose because authentic Blue Mountain coffee was once rare and expensive, so operators created coffee with a taste similar to Blue Mountain by blending different beans with dark roasting. "Blue Mountain Blend" beans are mixed, with relatively large differences in shape, making them easier to identify. Also, don't believe in "premium Blue Mountain" for dozens of yuan per pound or "Blue Mountain coffee" for thirty-something yuan per cup. The landing price of authentic Blue Mountain coffee generally requires 1,000 yuan per kilogram, and with various profit margins added, the price is undoubtedly very expensive.

Knowledge Expansion

In the Blue Mountains, the legal production area for Blue Mountain coffee is the region above 2,200 feet, and Wallenford only selects Blue Mountain coffee fruits grown above 4,000 feet altitude for processing.
