FrontStreet Coffee - Coffee Bean Brand Recommendation: Introduction to Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain Coffee is the finest coffee in the world, with limited production that makes it precious due to its rarity. The Blue Mountains are located in the eastern part of Jamaica Island. When the weather is clear, the sun shines directly on the azure Caribbean Sea, and the mountain peaks reflect the brilliant blue light of the seawater, hence the name. The highest peak of Blue Mountain reaches 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region and a famous tourist destination.
This area is situated in the coffee belt, with fertile volcanic soil, fresh air free from pollution, and a humid climate with year-round fog and rain (average rainfall of 1,980 mm and temperature around 27°C). Such climate conditions have created the world-renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, as well as the world's most expensive coffee.
This coffee possesses all the characteristics of excellent coffee. It not only has a rich and mellow flavor but also perfectly balances the three primary tastes of coffee: sweetness, acidity, and bitterness. Therefore, it has no bitter taste at all, with only moderate and perfect acidity. Generally, it's consumed as a single-origin coffee. However, due to its extremely limited production and incredibly high price, the market typically uses coffees with similar flavors as substitutes.
The "Secret" Behind Blue Mountain Coffee's Pure Flavor
Their coffee trees all grow on rugged mountain slopes, making the harvesting process extremely difficult. Only skilled local female workers can accomplish this task. Selecting properly ripe coffee beans during harvest is crucial, as under-ripe or over-ripe beans will affect the coffee quality. After harvesting, coffee beans must be hulled the same day, then fermented for 12-18 hours. Following this, the beans undergo washing and sorting.
The next step is drying, which must be conducted on concrete floors or thick blankets until the coffee bean moisture content drops to 12%-14%. The beans are then stored in special warehouses. When needed, they are taken out for roasting and then ground into powder. All these procedures must be strictly controlled; otherwise, the coffee quality will be affected.
Coffee Storage Recommendations
Whether Blue Mountain coffee beans or other coffee beans, they should all be stored in bean form to preserve the coffee's flavor to the greatest extent. Ground coffee quickly loses its flavor, and over time, you won't be able to taste its characteristics. Therefore, coffee is best preserved in bean form. However, the flavor shelf life of coffee beans is one month, after which they still lose flavor, so it's best to consume them within this period.
Knowledge Extension
In the Blue Mountains, the designated production area for Blue Mountain Coffee is the region above 2,200 feet. Wallenford only selects Blue Mountain coffee fruits grown at elevations above 4,000 feet for processing.
