Introduction to FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling
Many people who are new to single-origin coffee have heard of FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling. There are many types of Mandheling on the market: Golden Mandheling, Premium Golden Mandheling, GAYO Mandheling, Tiger Mandheling, Maface Mandheling, and Emerald Mandheling. Why are there so many Mandheling varieties on the market, and what are their characteristics?
In fact, Mandheling is not a region name, place name, port name, or coffee variety name. It is actually a mispronunciation of the Mandheling ethnic group from Mandheling, Indonesia. The coffee beans widely grown in Sumatra and other Indonesian islands by locals are all called Mandheling. Different names are used to distinguish Mandheling from different regions based on the area and green bean suppliers.
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic country. Arabica coffee trees were introduced for cultivation as early as the 18th century during Dutch colonial rule. The main producing areas are located on Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi islands. The Mandheling produced there has a deep, low-acidity, full-bodied taste, earning it the reputation of 'the world's most important coffee.' Among these, Sumatra has the largest production, with the northern Aceh province being the largest producing area.
Lintong is located in the Lake Toba area at the northern end of Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Lake Toba (Indonesian: Danau Toba, English: Lake Toba) is a volcanic lake located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. This lake is diamond-shaped, 100 kilometers long, 30 kilometers wide, covering an area of 1,130 square kilometers. It is an alpine lake with an average elevation of about 900 meters and is also the world's largest volcanic lake. The Premium Golden Mandheling and FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling that we are familiar with are both produced in the Lintong region of northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling has a quality mouthfeel with excellent body. It features rich bitterness and aroma with hints of raw chocolate flavor. Beneath the high body and bitterness lies a strong woody fragrance. The acidity is low but distinct, while sweetness often presents itself through the sweet aftertaste that follows the bitterness, making it truly intriguing. These layered flavors have made it one of the most well-known single-origin coffees, suitable for enthusiasts seeking a full-bodied taste. Unlike other floral and fruity coffee beans, it often exhibits some spice, herbal, or earthy aromas.
When it comes to whether Mandheling is expensive, it's hard to say definitively. Mandheling has different grades based on the grading system, and prices vary according to these grades. The most expensive should be Golden Mandheling.
FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling
Golden Mandheling is often mistaken for a high-standard selection grade among coffee beans. In reality, it is produced from Mandheling acquired locally in Indonesia by a coffee company called Pwani Coffee Company (PWN), which subsequently registered the Golden Mandheling trademark. Although this name is unrelated to grade, it represents an exclusive highest quality—Golden Mandheling stamped with the PWN imprint. PWN's Golden Mandheling undergoes three manual selections and one machine selection, resulting in very beautiful beans that are full and plump with a defect rate of only 2%. The sweetness, cleanliness, body, and wild spice flavors of FrontStreet Coffee's Golden Mandheling are slightly superior to FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling G1, which is one reason why Golden Mandheling is much more expensive than G1.
Knowledge Extension
"Mandheling" is neither a place name, producing area name, nor port name, and certainly not a variety name. It is a mispronunciation of the Mandailing ethnic group living on Sumatra Island.
