How are Mandheling varieties classified?

Mandheling is divided into various regional types such as Lintong Mandheling and Golden Mandheling, among others. What exactly are the differences between these Mandheling varieties?

Golden Mandheling is actually produced from Mandheling beans sourced locally in Indonesia by Pwani Coffee Company, which registered the name "Golden Mandheling." Therefore, only the Mandheling produced by this company is truly authentic Golden Mandheling. However, as cultivation techniques continue to evolve, many coffee farmers' Mandheling varieties have gradually begun to catch up to the premium taste of Golden Mandheling, though Golden Mandheling still offers a bit more body and a cleaner flavor profile.

Additionally, Mandheling green beans may not look particularly appealing, but after roasting, the cooked beans display a beautiful color and fullness. This might teach us not to judge by appearances—after proper processing, transformation can occur!

It's neither astringent nor acidic, allowing the body and bitterness to be fully expressed. It's considered the world's most full-bodied coffee. For friends unfamiliar with specialty coffee, the distinction between the two might be unclear. In theory, both Mandheling and Americano are black coffee since no additional flavorings are added to alter the taste. The difference is that Americano is derived from espresso and uses espresso beans, while Mandheling is a single-origin coffee made using pour-over methods.
