FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Growing Region
Ethiopia is a magical country where Arabica coffee originated. The Kaffa Forest is where it all began, located in southwestern Ethiopia.
Over centuries of natural evolution in Kaffa, approximately 5,000 coffee varieties have been developed. Currently, local communities manage about 12,000 hectares of Kaffa's wild coffee areas. Through the introduction of Participatory Forest Management (PFM), approximately 4,500 farmers have the legal right to harvest wild coffee cherries and are obligated to protect the forest. Regarding Kaffa, there are rumors that it was the first place where coffee was cooked and consumed. For coffee enthusiasts, this place is as enchanting as the Garden of Eden.
In a region called Bonga in Kaffa, over 100 Ethiopians are dedicated to cultivating high-quality Arabica coffee. This area has excellent coffee growing conditions, with altitudes between 1600-1900 meters, red soil, and suitable temperatures. The region receives high rainfall and is considered one of the areas with the most precipitation in Ethiopia. As one of Ethiopia's first two biosphere reserves, the well-known Gesha is actually a region within Kaffa.
Kaffa coffee typically includes: Gimbo, Gewata, and Chena.
Coffee Cultivation in Ethiopia
Due to administrative region divisions in Ethiopia around 1995, the biggest impact on coffee regions was that the original Sidamo province was divided into the new Sidama (occupying a small portion) and most of it incorporated into the Oromia region. The Yirgacheffe area, originally part of Sidamo province, is now included in the new Gedeo zone.
Currently, Ethiopian coffee items on the market may have mixed naming based on new and old region names. Here, we'll use the new regional divisions as a baseline, combined with administrative regions, to understand Ethiopia's coffee cultivation map.
Coffee cultivation in Yirgacheffe mostly follows a garden coffee model, where coffee farmers plant coffee trees near their living areas, harvest them during the harvest season, and then send them to nearby processing plants built near water sources for unified processing (or purchased by intermediaries). Except for a few powerful estates that independently plant, harvest, and process coffee beans, many coffee beans from different regions and varieties are centrally processed by processing plants and then sent to auction houses for official evaluation and grading.
This is why many Ethiopian coffee beans are named and distinguished by processing plants or cooperatives, and also one of the reasons why the same batch of coffee beans may contain multiple coffee varieties. Even coffee beans from the same processing plant may have significant flavor differences between different batches. Washed Yirgacheffe has very elegant floral and fruit aromas, with notes of lemon, jasmine, and berries.
Knowledge Expansion
As the largest green bean company in the Netherlands, Trabocca has been deeply involved in Ethiopian production areas for nearly 20 years. Not only did it first bring organic certification to Ethiopia, but it also launched the well-known "Red Cherry Project." In recent years, it has also introduced "The Ethiopian Cup," a green bean auction project.
