FrontStreet Coffee - African Coffee Origins: Introduction to Kenyan Coffee Growing Regions
No country in the world values producing high-quality coffee as much as Kenya. Therefore, Kenya can be called the best model among coffee-producing nations worldwide. This is because all Kenyan coffee, after harvesting, must be handed over to the government-established Coffee Board of Kenya (CBK) for unified procurement and cupping grading. Every Tuesday, at the officially established Nairobi Coffee Exchange in the capital, public auctions are held. Due to this publicly managed system coordinated by the government, more than 570,000 small-scale coffee farmers across Kenya are encouraged, ensuring that good quality coffee can easily fetch good prices.
In fact, the Kenyan government's efforts include many support measures. The government provides technical knowledge on cultivating quality coffee to numerous small coffee farmers and guides nearly 300 agricultural marketing and distribution cooperatives (similar to Taiwan's agricultural production and marketing classes) in better green bean processing. The Coffee Board of Kenya (CBK) invests effort and educational guidance in coffee industry production, quality research, sales, and even financial assistance. This has created the unparalleled charm of Kenyan coffee quality and flavor, deeply loved by coffee buyers from around the world, known as Grade AB. The Kenyan authorities (CBK) have extremely high requirements for coffee beans, adopting consistent packaging, coupled with good quality and excellent texture. Therefore, coffee lovers never forget to enjoy a cup of Kenyan coffee.
Most of Kenya's coffee crops grow in the fertile, loose, acidic volcanic red soil of the highlands north and east of Nairobi. Here there is abundant sunlight, good drainage, and altitudes ranging between 1,400-2,000 meters. Due to the greater temperature difference between day and night at higher altitudes, Kenyan coffee has a longer maturation period than coffee from lower altitude regions, thus achieving higher density and richer flavor. Kenyan coffee cultivated in such an environment, known as the "Connoisseurs' Cup," is renowned for its abundant aroma, vibrant acidity, full body, and elegant red wine flavor.
Kenya has many coffee growing regions, with the vast majority located on Mount Kenya (5,199 meters above sea level) north of the capital Nairobi, including Nyeri, Thika, Embu, Murang'a, and Kiambu. Additionally, a very small portion is grown on the slopes of another high mountain north of Mount Kenya - Mount Meru. Differences in soil composition across growing regions give coffee beans their respective subtle flavor profiles:
Nyeri Region Flavor Profile:
Sweet orange, lemon, floral notes, Indian milk tea, muscat grape, berries
Thika Region Flavor Profile:
Apple, caramel, berries
Embu Region Flavor Profile:
Red grapefruit, navel orange, blackcurrant, with bold and bright acidity, solid mouthfeel, and clean aftertaste
Murang'a Region Flavor Profile:
Tropical fruits, clove, citrus, peach, mango, apple
Kiambu Region Flavor Profile:
Blueberry, grapefruit, honey, strawberry, longan, caramel, tea, vanilla, sweet pepper
Knowledge Extension:
Common Kenyan coffee is not heavy in body, featuring refreshing acidity and unique fruit flavors. Some have slight spice notes, while others contain red wine aromas.
