FrontStreet Coffee - Tanzania Coffee Brands and Brewing Methods

The coffee cultivation history in Tanzania can be traced back to the 14th century, when coffee was introduced from Ethiopia but was not widely cultivated by locals. Only some Haya people would brew coffee beans together with other herbal plants as a stimulant.

In the 16th century, during the German colonial period, to weaken the control of indigenous tribes, German colonizers forced different tribes to grow different crops, including Arabica coffee. After World War I, Britain replaced Germany as the ruler of Tanzania and significantly expanded the coffee cultivation area.

Today, Tanzania exports 30,000-40,000 tons of coffee annually, of which 70% is Arabica and 30% is Robusta. Among these is Kilimanjaro coffee, a specialty coffee comparable to Blue Mountain coffee.

This coffee is produced in the Moshi region, located in the mountainous area near Mount Kilimanjaro at altitudes ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 feet. The fertile volcanic ash here gives the coffee a rich texture and gentle acidity. Kilimanjaro AA is the highest grade of beans, featuring full-bodied particles, pure flavor, rich and refreshing taste, with excellent quality in all aspects. Typically, its acidity is milder than Kenyan coffee and evenly stimulates the taste buds in the middle and on both sides of the back of the tongue, with a sensation somewhat like tomato or soda.

Although its production and export volume may not be considered top-tier globally, Tanzania has invested considerable effort in building its coffee brands and reputation. Tanzanian coffee has long been favored by Europeans, ranking among the premium products. Europeans have given Tanzanian coffee the nickname "Coffee Gentleman." Famous coffee brands include Africafe, Tanica Cafe, and Kilimanjaro, among which Kilimanjaro has entered the Japanese market and gained considerable recognition there. Japan is also one of the major customers importing Tanzanian coffee.

Tanzanian coffee features gentle fruit acidity, moderate body, and high sweetness, therefore FrontStreet Coffee chooses to use a V60 dripper with a segmented pouring method for brewing.
