FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Why Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is Exported to Japan

When mentioning Blue Mountain Coffee, one must mention a country - Jamaica. Jamaica is located in the Caribbean region of Central America, a small island nation situated in the tropics. Due to its humid and rainy climate, the eastern mountainous region has formed an area abundant in high-quality coffee beans, with the Blue Mountains among them. Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, on clear days when the sun shines directly on the azure sea surface, the mountain peaks reflect the brilliant blue light of the seawater, hence its name.

Blue Mountain Coffee is produced from introduced Arabica coffee beans, characterized by large beans, excellent quality, and rich, mellow flavor. Due to the perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness in the coffee, it has no bitter taste at all, only moderate and perfect acidity.

According to different altitudes in the Blue Mountains, different grades of coffee are produced. Authentic Blue Mountain Coffee must be made from coffee beans grown between 910-1700m altitude. Coffee grown at 460-910m altitude is called Jamaica High Mountain Coffee, while coffee grown below 460m is called Jamaica Prime Coffee. Like wine, Blue Mountain Coffee has different estates to distinguish growing regions, with three main growing areas: St. Andrew, Portland, and St. Thomas.

Jamaica is one of the countries with lower coffee production, producing 30 million bags (60kg per bag) of coffee annually. Blue Mountain Coffee produces only about 40,000 bags per year, following a luxury product route. Additionally, the government has established strict and detailed standards for the processing, roasting, and packaging of Blue Mountain Coffee, with specific regulations even on what organic fertilizers to use during the growing period. All harvesting is done manually. Jamaica is also the last country that still uses traditional wooden barrels for packaging and transporting coffee.

In 1960, the Jamaica Blue Mountain region was struck by a hurricane, destroying most estate facilities and coffee trees. This reminds us of poor Sri Lanka and Java, but Blue Mountain Coffee has always been fortunate. Its devoted fans, the Japanese, unhesitatingly extended a helping hand. The economic support from the Japanese enabled Blue Mountain Coffee to recover.

Knowledge Bonus: The coffee tree variety of Blue Mountain Coffee is "Geisha High Bred" variety, all grown on rugged slopes, making harvesting difficult. This reminds us of Mocha coffee, which also grows in dangerous areas. It seems that good things are hard to come by.
