FrontStreet Coffee Shares Tips on Selecting Coffee

When selecting coffee beans, pay attention to the following points:

A. Origin

Online, some shops might use coffee beans not from their original origin. For example, some Blue Mountain coffee might not actually be from Jamaica. Similarly, if a package only mentions "Colombia" or "Brazil" without specific estate information, it typically contains coffee beans from large production regions. Origin coffees also have commercial and specialty grades, so not all Ethiopian beans are necessarily specialty grade. It's best to find beans that can be traced to specific regions and origins, as these typically won't disappoint. If you're not particularly particular, trying beans from different origins can also be enjoyable.

How to Understand Coffee Names Like "Ethiopia Natural G1 Sidamo Hambella Guji 2.0"

Coffee beans inherently have distinct regional characteristics. Before purchasing, understanding the coffee's flavor profile is helpful. Coffee labels, much like wine labels, typically provide extensive information about the coffee's flavor. From a coffee name like "Ethiopia Natural Sidamo Hambella Guji 2.0," we can gather the following information: Country: Ethiopia, Region: Sidamo Hambella, Grade: G1, Processing Method: Natural, Name: Guji 2.0.

If you purchase beans only labeled "Ethiopia" without other information, they typically come from large production regions.

B. Packaging Date (Roasting Date)

Pay attention to whether the packaging date is recent. Generally, raw coffee beans have a shelf life of one to two years, while roasted beans maintain their freshness within 2 months. Therefore, select freshly roasted coffee beans and use them within their freshness period to fully enjoy the coffee's most captivating aromas and rich flavors.

Freshly roasted coffee beans contain large amounts of gas and have active respiration. During extraction, gases release from the beans, creating the wonderful, rich bubbles we see. However, some lightly roasted beans may not exhibit such pronounced bubbling.

C. Shop and Brand

This goes without saying—some coffees might mix with other varieties to reduce costs. Be cautious. For example, mixing cheaper coffee beans into expensive varieties, or blending poor-quality beans of the same variety with high-quality ones can significantly affect the taste. When purchasing coffee beans, try to choose reputable shops or brands. Domestic home-roasted beans are typically fresher than supermarket offerings. Select trustworthy coffee shops.
