Carmen Estate: A Legacy of Excellence

Established in 1950, Carmen Estate is situated on Volcan Mountain at an elevation of 1,750 meters. This location represents one of the most important coffee-growing regions in the Baru volcanic area of Central America's Panama. The climate is uniquely influenced by both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, providing abundant sunshine during the day and dry, frost-free nights. The fertile volcanic soil and excellent drainage create the ideal environment for coffee cultivation.

Environmental Sustainability Certification

Carmen Estate has earned the Certified Eco-OK Coffees certification from the Rainforest Alliance. This certification is extremely rigorous, requiring compliance with environmental standards throughout every stage of cultivation and green bean processing. Requirements include biodiversity within the estate, zero-pollution processing methods, reduced or restricted use of artificial chemical fertilizers, and socioeconomic security for the estate's coffee farmers.

Harvesting and Processing

The coffee harvest season at Carmen Estate runs from December to the end of March each year. When coffee cherries reach maturity, they are hand-picked, while unripe beans are left for later harvesting. After daily picking, the cherries are immediately transported to the processing facility. Machine washing removes the outer skin and pulp, with all washing residues being recycled into organic fertilizer rather than discarded. This organic fertilizer is then reused across the estate's farms, ensuring the entire process aligns with sustainable ecological development practices.

Tasting Profile

In terms of flavor, Carmen Estate SHB, when medium-roasted at Nap Cafe, presents a clean taste with subtle sweetness. It features excellent aftertaste and a hint of very gentle acidity.
