FrontStreet Coffee: Coffee Growing Conditions and Coffee Tree Characteristics
Coffee cannot be grown in any environment. Originally a plant that grows in tropical rainforest conditions, coffee has developed during its phylogenetic evolution to require quiet winds, cool temperatures, shade or semi-shade, and humid environments. Therefore, coffee has strict requirements for growing conditions. We call the strip-shaped area between 25 degrees north and south latitude, suitable for coffee growth, the coffee belt.
1. Temperature
Temperature requirements vary by cultivation variety. Arabica varieties are more cold-resistant and prefer cool climates, requiring an average annual temperature of 19-21°C.
2. Rainfall
Annual rainfall should be above 1250 mm and evenly distributed. Particularly during flowering and young fruit development periods, certain rainfall amounts are most suitable for coffee growth and development.
3. Light
Coffee cannot tolerate strong light and requires appropriate shade. Excessive light inhibits growth. If combined with insufficient water and fertilizer, premature aging may occur, even leading to death. Excessive shade causes excessive branch and leaf growth, sparse flowers and fruits, resulting in very low yields.
4. Wind
Coffee prefers environments with calm winds.
5. Soil
Coffee has well-developed root systems with shallowly distributed absorbing roots, requiring loose, fertile, and well-drained loam soil.
What are the Characteristics of Coffee Trees?
1. Roots
Coffee roots have a conical root system.
2. Stem
The coffee stem, also called the main trunk, develops from erect branches.
3. Leaves
Simple leaves are opposite, green, elliptical to long-elliptical in shape.
4. Flowers
The flowers are white and fragrant.
5. Fruit
The fruit is a drupe, typically containing 2 seeds, though sometimes 1 or 3 seeds may be present.
