Although pour-over coffee may appear simple, it's actually a meticulous process. Small details can significantly impact the coffee's flavor. To brew a delicious cup of pour-over coffee, besides using quality beans, you must master some key techniques.

The coffee-to-water ratio is crucial for a standard black coffee. Beginners typically don't know the optimal ratio for their taste, so using an electronic scale to measure both coffee beans and water is essential. Otherwise, coffee that's too strong or too weak will greatly diminish the flavor profile of your pour-over.

For beginners, using 225ml of water with 15g of coffee beans is recommended as it's easier to handle. Once you become more experienced, you can adjust according to your preferences by increasing or decreasing the water amount. Coffee connoisseurs are already familiar with pour-over techniques, so they can generally achieve their preferred ratios even without measuring.

Generally, pour-over coffee is recommended to use around 15g of coffee grounds per brew, which provides an extraction time that's neither too short nor too long, allowing for a uniform and effective extraction. Keep the kettle spout close to the coffee bed to avoid excessive impact that creates a deep V-shape. Beginners should use a narrow-spout kettle for better flow control.

FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe Pour-Over Parameters and Steps

All Yirgacheffe region coffee beans sold by FrontStreet Coffee are lightly roasted and shipped within 5 days of roasting. Only freshly roasted coffee beans can deliver rich aroma and flavor.

For brewing methods, drip pour-over coffee is optimal. During grinding, you'll notice the prominent fruit aromas, citrus-like acidity, and roasted almond notes of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe coffee.

Due to the shorter roasting time, the coffee bean structure hasn't undergone significant changes during heating, making it harder for compounds to release into water. FrontStreet Coffee recommends using medium-fine grinding with high water temperature for brewing.

FrontStreet Coffee's brewing parameters for Yirgacheffe coffee beans are: 15g coffee grounds, 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, medium-fine grind (granulated sugar size / 80% passes through China #20 standard sieve), water temperature 90-91°C.

Brewing technique: Bloom with 30g of water for 30 seconds. Using a small water flow, pour in circles to 125g, then segment. Continue pouring to 225g when the water level drops to just reveal the coffee bed. Remove the filter cup when the water level drops to just reveal the coffee bed again (timing starts from bloom). Total extraction time: 2'00".
