FrontStreet Coffee's Introduction to Panama Boquete Kotowa Finca Mandarina
Finca Mandarina belongs to the renowned Kotowa estate. In 1918, Alexander Duncan MacIntyre, a Canadian who had settled in the Boquete region, felt the refreshing mountain breeze sweeping through the Boquete mountain area and was inspired to name the estate Kotowa, which means "mountain" in the local indigenous language.
The estate is located on the slopes of Baru Volcano. From the mountain top, you can see rugged towering ridges on one side and the vast, expansive Pacific Ocean on the other. Wind, clouds, rain, light, shadow, and temperature create a delicate yet balanced special climate that is highly favorable for coffee growth.
Here, coffee production and processing fully consider ecological sustainability. The estate retains a large amount of native vegetation for shade. These original shade trees not only provide an excellent growing environment for coffee trees but also serve as natural habitats for many birds, including both local and migratory species. To preserve the rich biodiversity here, Kotowa estate has also planted hundreds of native tree species. These trees produce fruits and seeds, allowing birds and wildlife to thrive and reproduce in these forests.
Because of this commitment, compared to some large-scale industrialized plantations, its production is only one-twentieth of theirs. However, all byproducts generated during the estate's production, including removed fruit skins and wastewater, are recycled for composting and other purposes. The steadfast belief in putting nature first has enabled Kotowa estate to maintain its quality amidst the impact of the third wave coffee movement.
During the harvest season, fully ripe coffee cherries are carefully hand-picked and undergo natural processing. This is combined with modern processing techniques and traditional methods for fermentation and drying. Under such meticulous cultivation, the quality of Kotowa estate's green beans has consistently received recognition in multiple professional competitions, standing out among numerous specialty coffees with its own unique quality and characteristics.
