FrontStreet Coffee's Introduction to Costa Rican Tarrazú Region Coffee Flavor

Costa Rica is located in the Central American isthmus at 10° north latitude and 84° west longitude. It borders the Caribbean Sea to the east and the North Pacific Ocean to the west. Costa Rica is situated on the low-latitude volcanic belt of Central America, with the Central Plateau and mountainous regions at elevations of approximately 800-2000 meters, making it ideal for coffee cultivation. Costa Rican coffee has always been renowned for its extremely balanced, clean, and bright flavor profile, with fruity acidity reminiscent of berries. Exceptional Costa Rican coffee exhibits spicy notes and cocoa flavors in its finish. The country's most famous growing region is Tarrazú, located near the capital San José. The Tarrazú region has the highest average latitude and excellent climate and soil conditions, making it the most famous and widely recognized premier coffee-producing region in Costa Rica. Tres Rios is a renowned sub-region within the Tarrazú area.

High-quality Costa Rican coffee is known as "Strictly Hard Bean" (SHB), a type of coffee that can grow at altitudes above 1500 meters. Altitude has always been a crucial factor for coffee growers. Higher altitude produces better coffee beans not only because it increases acidity, thereby enhancing flavor, but also because the lower nighttime temperatures at higher elevations slow tree growth, resulting in more concentrated flavor in the coffee beans.

Costa Rican coffee beans are full-bodied, with ideal acidity and a unique, intense aroma. Coffee beans produced in the high-altitude regions of Costa Rica are world-renowned for their richness and mild flavor. These coffee beans undergo meticulous processing, which is why they achieve such high quality. Tarrazú is located south of the Costa Rican capital San José and is one of the country's valued coffee-growing areas. Tarrazú is one of the world's major coffee-producing regions.

Costa Rican coffee exhibits subtle flavor differences depending on the cultivation region. Tarrazú is a renowned emerging region in Costa Rica with the best soil and high yields. Generally, even when cultivating and producing the same coffee variety in the same country and region, it's impossible to harvest coffee of identical quality each year. This is because coffee is susceptible to natural influences such as wind, rain, and sun. Despite this, Tarrazú can pride itself on producing coffee that emits fresh berry flavors and a bright, clean coffee taste.
