FrontStreet Coffee's Introduction to Panama Elida Green Top Geisha Coffee
Elida Estate is located in the Boquete region of Chiriquí Province, Panama's western border province. The province's most famous landmark and tourist destination is the 3,300-meter-high Barú Volcano. Barú Volcano is one of the highest volcanoes in Central America, with a total area of approximately 14,000 hectares. It can be divided into 7 different microclimate zones based on altitude. Many rare plants, birds, and mammals inhabit the volcanic area, so it has been designated as a national park for protection, prohibiting hunting and human development and destruction.
The Best of Panama (BOP) competition organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama continuously encourages producers to seek the best varieties, cultivation techniques, and processing methods to achieve ultimate quality. Elida Estate is owned by the Lamastus family and began planting coffee in 1918. Through continuous efforts, it has won numerous BOP awards. This year, Elida Estate's ASD natural Geisha achieved the highest score in COE history with 95.12 points.
Elida Estate is the oldest coffee estate in Panama's history and one of the highest-altitude estates in the Boquete region. Located in Alto Quiel, Boquete, it grows Geisha at ultra-high altitude (2050m). Not only has it won multiple BOP championships, but it is also the record holder for the highest BOP cupping score! Elida Estate's altitude ranges from 1,700 to 2,200 meters, with part of it located within Volcan Baru National Park. The park is a World Cultural Heritage and ecological protection area, serving as a habitat conservation zone for exotic plants, birds, and mammals (such as tropical jaguars).
The farm has a total of 65 hectares, of which 35 hectares are planted with Catuai, Geisha, and a small amount of Typica, while the remainder consists of private forest reserves or is within Barú Volcano National Park. Due to the high altitude where coffee is grown (there are 7 different climate zones based on altitude), the green beans are very dense and uniform. They are mild, with moderate aroma, good fragrance, and high acidity. These estate coffees are considered among the best in the world.
Geisha Classification
Geisha is classified into two main categories based on leaf color: Green Leaf Geisha and Copper Leaf Geisha. Green Leaf Geisha is characterized by floral aromas, intense acidity, and sweetness.
Copper Leaf Geisha, on the other hand, is dominated by weight and sweetness, with less prominent acidity.
