FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Elida Estate Geisha

Elida Estate

A frequent winner in recent B.O.P (Best of Panama) competitions, Elida Estate also qualified for B.O.P in 2018 and secured multiple rankings. In 2017, it was crowned B.O.P champion, setting an unsurpassable score of 94.15.

Elida Estate enjoys exceptionally favorable conditions, located in the Boquete growing region and standing as one of Panama's highest-altitude coffee estates. Moreover, nearly half of its area lies within a national protected park, making it a rare ultra-high-altitude estate in Central America!

The estate's history can be traced back to 1918. It is owned by the Lamastus family, and the farm's name "Elida" was named after the wife of the farm owner at that time, Robert Louis Lamastus.

Microclimate Zones and Superior Natural Ecological Environment

Elida Estate covers a total area of 65 hectares, with more than half located within the Baru Volcano National Park. Of the estate's 65 hectares, 30 hectares are planted with coffee trees, while the remaining 35 hectares consist of pristine forest. The coffee is grown at altitudes ranging from 1,670 to 1,850 meters, making it one of the two highest-altitude coffee estates in Panama.

Baru is a rugged, young volcano with an elevation exceeding 3,400 meters. It is an active volcano surrounded by seven different microclimate zones, which have nurtured a rich and diverse ecological environment. Elida Estate spans across several of these zones. The diverse microclimates present both advantages and disadvantages for coffee cultivation. For Elida, its coffee flavors are more intense and aromatic with greater complexity compared to most Panamanian coffees.

Of course, the ultra-high altitude terrain also has drawbacks. Due to significant temperature variations between morning and evening, coffee at Elida Estate requires 5 years of care after planting before the first harvest can be realized—a considerably long waiting period (coffee in most producing regions typically takes only 3 years). Although plant growth is slower, this significantly benefits the development of coffee flavors.

The 2019 Best of Panama (hereafter referred to as BOP) auction concluded successfully. The Elida Estate Natural ASD Geisha from the Lamastus family's Elida Estate achieved a bidding price of $1,029 per pound (approximately 20,000 RMB per kilogram for green beans), breaking last year's record of $801 per pound that they themselves had set, and once again creating a new world record for the most expensive coffee.

KOMENCU's roasting uses light roast to best express the origin's flavor characteristics. Employing the four-six brewing method perfectly interprets the ultimate flavors of the Best Geisha 19PA02, using 20g of coffee grounds for brewing.
