Catuai
Catuai is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra, making it a second-generation cross. It inherits the advantage of Caturra's short plant height, overcoming the drawbacks of Mundo Novo; it also compensates for the fragility of Arabica cherries. The fruit is firm and less likely to fall off when exposed to strong winds. The biggest regret is that its overall flavor is somewhat less complex than Caturra.
Discovered by Brazilian agricultural research institutions in the 1950s and 1960s. Some sources say it first appeared in the late 1940s.
The variety name Catuai comes from an indigenous language, meaning "very good."
As a member of the Arabica family, Catuai is relatively high-yielding.
The plants are relatively short, with smaller angles between lateral branches and main branches.
In addition to higher yields, another prominent advantage is that coffee cherries do not easily fall off after ripening, showing strong resistance to wind and rain. It is favored in regions with frequent storms.
Additionally, it requires adequate fertilization and care.
Catuai can adapt well to various altitudes, and when planted above 800m, its cup quality will be even more outstanding.
Fruit colors commonly include red and yellow: Red Catuai and Yellow Catuai.
Catuai is widely grown in Central and South American coffee-producing regions, including Brazil. Catuai comes in both red and yellow fruit varieties, with the red variety more frequently winning awards compared to the yellow one. Catuai, Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon are collectively known as Brazil's four major coffee varieties.
The state of Espírito Santo in Brazil is a renowned coffee-producing region located in southeastern Brazil. The average altitude of plantations in the highland areas ranges between 1,100-1,200 meters, with perfect climatic conditions highly suitable for growing Arabica. The coffee beans produced here are full-bodied, with subtle and balanced acidity, soft and smooth mouthfeel, and aromas of caramel, chocolate, and yellow fruits, leaving a lasting aftertaste.
