Mandheling, Sumatra Mandheling, is one of Asia's most famous and in-demand coffees. Although unattractive in appearance, coffee enthusiasts often say that the less appealing Sumatra coffee beans look, the better, richer, and smoother their taste.
Mandheling is not a region name, place name, port name, nor a coffee variety name. It is the phonetic translation of the Indonesian Mandheling ethnic group.
During World War II when Japan occupied Indonesia, a Japanese soldier drank an incredibly fragrant and mellow coffee in a café. He asked the shop owner for the coffee's name, but the owner misunderstood and thought he was asking about his nationality, so he replied: "Mandheling." After the war, the Japanese soldier recalled the "Mandheling" he had drunk in Indonesia. He then commissioned an Indonesian coffee merchant to ship 15 tons to Japan, which surprisingly became very popular. The name Mandheling thus spread, and that coffee merchant is now the renowned PWN Coffee Company.
The word "coffee" originates from the Greek "Kaweh," meaning "strength and passion."
The unique sour, bitter, sweet, and mellow (aromatic) flavors of coffee are half the reason people become addicted to it. Tasting coffee is half about appreciating the fusion of these flavors.
The Rich and Fragrant Mandheling
When it comes to the world's mellowest coffee, none other than Mandheling deserves this title. It has a very rich flavor, full and substantial texture, aromatic, bitter, and mellow, with a slight sweetness that is rich and intriguing, accompanied by a pleasant acidity. The low acidity can also be clearly tasted. The jumping micro-acidity mixed with the richest aroma allows one to easily experience the lively factors within the gentle richness. Additionally, Mandheling coffee has a faint earthy fragrance, with a special taste that is beloved by many coffee enthusiasts.
Mandheling has always expressed its most unique sweetness through its most distinctive bitterness, much like the sweetness and bitterness of life. No amount of sugar can cover that bitterness. When first tasting it, one is amazed. But the fascinating aroma it exudes makes us unable to control our crazy obsession with it. Its bitterness is like the thorns beside a flower, making one self-aware, while its fragrance is refreshing. Mandheling's bitterness won't make you annoyed; instead, it will make you feel more awake. Before you encounter real pain, Mandheling is just an ordinary bitter beverage, just a liquid to refresh you, just a tool to make you pause temporarily; when you truly encounter pain, she will smile and tell you: "Because love is refined from bitterness." Letting you calm down and savor it carefully.
Mandheling coffee, without adding other milk and sugar, belongs to black coffee.
