FrontStreet Coffee - Sidamo vs Colombian Coffee Comparison

Sidamo is a coffee-producing region in southern Ethiopia, situated at an altitude of 4,600-7,200 feet (1,400-2,194 meters). Located in the southernmost part of the Ethiopian plateau, it borders Kenya.

Coming from the renowned coffee-producing region of Sidamo, Ethiopia - Guji, local coffee is processed using both traditional washed and natural methods that have a long history. Most coffee-producing areas in this region easily exceed altitudes of 2,000 meters, resulting in coffee with exceptionally rich flavors. The region is predominantly home to small farmers with only one to two hectares of land, who naturally cultivate their coffee without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, carefully hand-picking fully ripe, vibrant red coffee cherries.

Sidamo is a large region in southern Ethiopia and home to Sidamo coffee farmers. The Sidamo Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union is merely an alliance of farmers who still make their living by growing, harvesting, and selling coffee. There are over 80,000 independent farmers within this alliance alone.

Fair trade, USDA organic, and other certifications are readily available for Sidamo coffee.

Coffee production in this region is deeply intertwined with their culture. The methods of planting, harvesting, and processing coffee have been passed down through generations. Sidamo boasts a profound coffee culture with a long history, making Sidamo coffee more fascinating than Brazilian coffee. Almost the entire Sidamo region is strictly high-altitude territory, with coffee grown at altitudes between 1,600 to 1,900 meters. This means the coffee here grows longer than average before reaching maturity and being harvested.
