FrontStreet Coffee Introduction - Yunnan Arabica Coffee
In China, Yunnan Arabica coffee is particularly popular. Belonging to the Rubiaceae family and Coffea genus, the cultivation areas are mainly distributed in regions such as Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Dehong, and Nujiang. Yunnan's superior geographical conditions have enabled rapid development of the coffee industry. In 2014, both planting area and production accounted for over 99% of the national total. Baoshan's Lujiang Basin has an average temperature of 21.5°C, reaching up to 40.4°C, and is basically frost-free year-round, making it a recognized prime location for Arabica coffee cultivation. The Arabica coffee cultivated here is renowned both domestically and internationally for being rich without bitterness, mellow and aromatic, with fruity notes.
Yunnan's coffee production accounts for 1% of global coffee production. Yunnan Arabica coffee was introduced by missionaries a century ago. Currently, 71 countries worldwide produce coffee, of which 5% is considered superior quality. Yunnan Baoshan Arabica coffee is grown at altitudes between 1000-1500 meters, with excellent climate conditions, ranking among the world's top 5% quality coffees. The largest coffee-consuming Western countries do not produce coffee themselves. Starbucks and Nestlé source coffee from Yunnan, using regular-grade coffee beans. Yunnan coffee quality belongs to one of the world's finest coffee varieties.
Coffee is an evergreen small tree of the Rubiaceae family, native to Africa. The main varieties cultivated as beverage plants are Arabica and Robusta. The Arabica coffee traditionally cultivated in China's Yunnan specifically refers to a mixed population of Bourbon and Typica varieties. Coffee has a slightly bitter yet refreshing taste and functions to refresh the mind, stimulate brain activity, and enhance appetite. Flavonoid compounds are an important component of coffee. Coffee isoflavones have high medicinal value, can scavenge free radicals in the human body, and possess biological activities and pharmacological effects such as anti-cancer, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. They can delay aging and have certain preventive and therapeutic effects on cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
Most Yunnan Arabica coffee is planted in dry-hot valley areas at altitudes around 1100 meters, resulting in moderate acidity with rich and mellow aroma. Many regions in Yunnan have unique environments suitable for Arabica coffee growth, producing excellent quality Arabica coffee. The main cultivation areas are distributed in Lincang, Baoshan, Simao, Xishuangbanna, Dehong, and Nujiang. The Arabica coffee cultivated here is renowned both domestically and internationally for being rich without bitterness, aromatic without harshness, with small and uniform beans, mellow and aromatic, and fruity notes.
