Do You Know the Difference Between Clear Coffee and Espresso?

Drink coffee every day, but do you know whether the coffee made by your brewing equipment is clear coffee or espresso? Do you know which equipment makes clear coffee? Which equipment makes espresso? FrontStreet Coffee will help you understand the difference between clear coffee, black coffee, and Americano.

Clear Coffee: Definition

Coffee brewed without any additives other than coffee beans is defined as clear coffee.

Brewing Methods for Clear Coffee:

1. Pour-over Coffee

Coffee brewed using filter paper and a drip cone filters out the coffee oils, resulting in coffee with prominent flavors and a balanced, smooth taste.

2. French Press Coffee

French Press? Don't let the word "press" fool you into thinking it makes espresso. The French press only involves a pressing process without using high-pressure extraction, so French press coffee still belongs to the clear coffee category.

Coffee from a French press tastes richer than pour-over coffee and has a more mellow mouthfeel.

3. Siphon Coffee

The working principle of a siphon pot mainly involves heating hot water, which due to thermal expansion and contraction, draws the hot water from the lower chamber to the upper chamber to brew coffee under atmospheric pressure. Because there's no high-pressure extraction, siphon-brewed coffee also belongs to the clear coffee series.

4. Drip Coffee Maker

Drip coffee makers actually mimic the pour-over coffee brewing process. Drip coffee makers come in fully automatic and semi-automatic varieties. Whether fully automatic or semi-automatic, the coffee produced belongs to the clear coffee category.

5. Aeropress

The Aeropress uses the principle of connected vessels, using this principle to push the coffee liquid into a sharing cup to complete the brewing process. Therefore, Aeropress-brewed coffee is also part of the clear coffee series.

Espresso: Definition

Coffee liquid extracted using high pressure is called espresso.

Brewing Methods for Espresso:

1. Espresso Machine

Whether portable espresso machines, commercial coffee machines, or home coffee machines, they all use pressure to extract coffee oils, and the coffee produced belongs to the espresso series. Americano is a type of black coffee made by diluting espresso with water.

2. Moka Pot

Because the Moka pot also uses pressure in its brewing process, the extracted coffee is also espresso.

3. Vietnamese Drip Filter

The Vietnamese filter requires very fine coffee grounds, similar in texture to flour used at home. During brewing, the filter's press plate is used to compact the coffee grounds, then water is added to drip slowly. The resulting coffee is rich and more mellow and intense than espresso from an espresso machine.
