Understanding Starbucks' Americano Coffee
When thinking of Starbucks coffee, doesn't Americano immediately come to mind? As Starbucks' most classic and globally renowned coffee product, many first-time visitors choose an Americano, only to take their first sip and exclaim: "Ah! So bitter!"
Americano is actually made by grinding dark-roasted coffee beans into extremely fine particles, then using a coffee machine to quickly extract a cup of highly concentrated espresso under high pressure and temperature. Based on the flavor characteristics of this espresso, an appropriate amount of water is added for dilution, creating the Americano coffee.
The characteristic of hot Americano coffee lies in its flavor depending on the taste and roast level of the espresso beans themselves. Typically, Starbucks uses dark-roasted espresso blend beans, with flavors reminiscent of dark cocoa and caramel.
Although Starbucks has never publicly disclosed which coffee bean regions are used in their store espresso blend, based on flavor characteristics, FrontStreet Coffee speculates that Brazilian coffee beans form the main base. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica coffee beans, offering both affordable pricing and distinctive flavor notes of nuts, cocoa, and caramel. After dark roasting, these beans can deliver rich, mellow coffee flavors.
Among the espresso blend coffee beans currently sold by FrontStreet Coffee, the "Specialty Blend Coffee Beans" (70% Brazilian Arabica coffee beans + 30% Colombian coffee beans) produces an Americano flavor profile similar to Starbucks' Americano. However, due to a slightly lighter roast than Starbucks', the taste is cleaner and more refreshing. With proper extraction, it can display flavors of roasted nuts, dark cocoa, and caramel.
Beyond Americano: Exploring Other Starbucks Favorites
In addition to Americano, Latte is also one of Starbucks' best-selling products and is definitely worth trying. Like Americano, latte preparation also requires espresso.
Heating milk and creating delicate foam before combining with espresso not only reduces the coffee's bitterness but also adds layers to the coffee's texture through the fine, dense foam. The milk fats also enhance the coffee's richness.
Iced latte, on the other hand, has no foam, but the richness of cold milk paired with espresso creates a refreshing and smooth beverage, perfect for those who don't like overly bitter coffee. Whether served cold or hot, Starbucks also offers skim milk/plant-based milk options to further meet customers' beverage customization needs.
Discovering Cold Brew Coffee
If you want to more clearly experience the unique regional flavors of coffee beans themselves, FrontStreet Coffee recommends trying Starbucks' Cold Brew. Unlike espresso, which is quickly extracted under high temperature and pressure by machines, cold brew coffee requires extraction with cold water at low temperatures for over 12 hours.
Since unpleasant substances in coffee require heat to be effectively released, cold brew coffee extracted at low temperatures often has less bitterness. Meanwhile, because of the long steeping time, some pleasant acidic and sweet substances in the coffee are more fully extracted, resulting in a fuller, smoother cold brew coffee taste.
You can easily make cold brew coffee at home too! You can order freshly roasted coffee beans from FrontStreet Coffee's flagship store (we recommend trying Ethiopia's Guji Coffee, with its rich sweet and sour berry juice notes; or Honduras' Sherry Coffee Beans, the same as Starbucks' barrel-aged coffee! It has whiskey aroma and vanilla cream flavors)
Then prepare a coffee grinder (it's best to grind fresh before brewing, but you can also specify cold brew grind). Grind 30g of coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency/sugar-sized particles, then place them in a clean, sealable container. Add water at a 1:10 ratio (300g of water), then seal and refrigerate for 8-12 hours. After extraction is complete, filter out the coffee grounds and it's ready to drink! If it's too strong, simply add an appropriate amount of water/ice cubes.
Choosing the Perfect Starbucks Drink
All the Starbucks coffee products mentioned above are quite suitable for female customers. When taking a girl to Starbucks, you might first ask about her taste preferences or any dietary restrictions. If there are no specific requirements and you're worried she might not like bitter coffee, choosing a latte is always a safe bet!
