The FrontStreet Coffee Gold Label and Red Label Gesha Village coffees on FrontStreet Coffee's menu are actually part of a grading system implemented by Ethiopia Gesha Village Coffee Estate for classifying different Gesha coffee bean lots based on their plots, altitudes, and varieties. The estate owner hopes to ensure that buyers receive the highest quality coffee beans through strict cupping standards and careful selection of each season's coffee batches.

Gesha Village Estate is located in the Gesha forest of Ethiopia's Bench Maji zone, covering an area of 475 hectares. For better management, the estate is divided into eight plots, primarily cultivating three main Ethiopian Gesha varieties. Although located in the same region, the coffee from these eight plots exhibits distinct flavor characteristics due to differences in varieties and altitudes.

Gesha Village Coffee Varieties

Gori Gesha: An indigenous variety originating from the Gori Gesha forest, covering 139 hectares, representing 43.7% of the estate's total area.

Gesha 1931: Most similar to the Panamanian Gesha variety in terms of plant morphology, bean shape, and cupping performance, covering 118.8 hectares, representing 37.3% of the estate's total area.

IIIubabor: An indigenous disease-resistant variety from Ethiopia, provided by the Ethiopian Research Center, originating from coffee forest samples in Ethiopia's IIIubabor region, covering 63.5 hectares, representing 20% of the estate's total area.

Gesha Village Coffee Grades

Coffee from Gesha Village Estate is classified into five grades: AUCTION, RARITIES (Gold Label), GROWERS RESERVE (Red Label), SINGLE-TERROIR (Green Label), and CHAKA batches.

AUCTION

Auction batch coffee beans represent only 3.7% of Gesha Village's annual production. These are the most premium batches from the estate, selected through rigorous screening, and can only be obtained through the global Gesha Village Coffee Estate auction.

In 2018, the cupping scores for annual auction batches ranged from 88.15 to 92.67 points, further divided into Champion's Reserve and Farm Reserve categories.

RARITIES Gold Label

Gold Label batches represent only 5% of Gesha Village's annual production. These are typically chosen by competition participants worldwide and purchased by roasters with high quality standards. They offer complete traceability, with each batch featuring prominent flavors and high complexity, making them the estate's second-best grade after auction lots.

Gesha Village Gold Label

FrontStreet Coffee currently sells Gesha Village Gold Label coffee beans from the Oma plot. This plot is located on the southern side of Gesha Village Estate, at altitudes ranging from 1931 to 2040 meters, responsible for cultivating the Gesha 1931 variety, covering a total area of 67.6 hectares.

GROWERS RESERVE Red Label

Red Label batches, originally named GROWERS RESERVE, translate to "Grower's Reserve Area." They represent 15% of the estate's total production and score above 88 points in SCA cupping.

Gesha Village Red Label

SINGLE-TERROIR Green Label

Green Label batches, originally named SINGLE-TERROIR, translate to "Single Terroir." This series provides detailed traceability information, allowing tracing to specific plots, coffee varieties, processing information and timing - truly single-origin coffee in the purest sense.

CHAKA

Gesha Village's CHAKA batches emphasize accessibility. They consist of a mix of all plots and coffee varieties from the entire estate, without emphasizing subdivisions. They can be said to represent the baseline quality level of Gesha Village Estate.

FrontStreet Coffee Gesha Village Gold Label Coffee Bean Processing

FrontStreet Coffee's new season Gold Label Gesha coffee beans come from the Oma plot, processed using natural drying methods lasting 30 days.

Gesha Village Natural Processing

After the estate workers harvest the coffee cherries, they first remove floating debris and impurities, then dry them in thin layers on African raised beds covered with plastic sheets. During drying on the beds, additional screening is performed to select out insect-damaged beans and underripe green coffee beans. The total drying time is 30 days. FrontStreet Coffee believes that naturally processed coffee exhibits noticeable sweetness, gentle acidity, and produces complex fruit-toned flavors.

Flavor Characteristics of FrontStreet Coffee Gesha Village Gold Label Coffee Beans

Careful observers may notice that although the Gold Label coffee beans belong to the Gesha variety, they are essentially indigenous varieties from the Ethiopian region. Despite being most similar to Panamanian Gesha varieties in terms of plant morphology, bean shape, and cupping performance, they haven't undergone human "domestication" (whereas Panamanian Gesha has been "domesticated" by humans and nature over many years to develop its current rich and captivating floral aromas and fruit acidity). Therefore, Ethiopian Gesha 1931 and Gesha varieties from Central and South America are two different varieties.
