The AeroPress is a simple manual coffee brewing device invented in 2005 by Alan Adler, president of the American company Aerobie. Overall, its structure resembles a syringe. When using it, place ground coffee and hot water inside the "syringe," then press down the plunger, and the coffee will flow through filter paper into a container. It combines the characteristics of drip and press-style coffee makers. By changing the coffee grind size and pressing speed, users can brew different flavors according to their preferences. Due to pressure injection, its brewing speed is also relatively fast. The "AeroPress" and "AeroPress" trademarks are owned by AeroPress, Inc.
Coffee brewing tools named with the word "press" include the French Press and AeroPress. The former has a long history, while the latter was invented in 2005 by the American company Aerobie. Anyone who has used a French Press to make coffee knows that the filter screen inside has relatively coarse holes. The so-called pressing is actually more like pushing a colander down to separate coffee grounds from liquid. Therefore, French Press coffee will have fine powder settled at the bottom of the cup, leading to over-extraction. Conversely, because the AeroPress uses much finer filter paper as a barrier, considerable force is needed when extracting coffee, which better matches the concept of "pressing."
The AeroPress is an immersion coffee brewing tool: attach filter paper to the bottom of the "syringe," pull up the plunger, add ground coffee, pour in hot water and stir, then press down the plunger after several tens of seconds.
Quick Knowledge
1. Why does the AeroPress come with a stir stick?
The handle at the top of the AeroPress stir stick prevents the stick from touching the filter paper and also avoids scratching the inner wall of the press chamber, which would affect airtightness.
2. Why doesn't the AeroPress have standard brewing instructions?
The AeroPress is like another siphon coffee maker invented by Americans. For Americans, French, Germans, and other European and American countries, the siphon is just a daily household item, making coffee is simple and convenient. However, the Japanese have elevated the siphon from a daily household item to the level of technology and art, using various methods to extract surprising specialty coffee with the siphon. It is precisely this spirit that has created Hario, making the development of Japan's coffee industry more professional. Japanese siphon product manuals do not mention methods for making coffee with the siphon, only instructions for the product itself. The Japanese emphasize that the siphon can extract a good cup of coffee, but they do not clearly explain how to do it or what methods to use.
3. What's the difference between standard filter paper and metal filters?
Using standard filter paper with the AeroPress results in coffee with a clean taste, noticeable acidity, and a lighter mouthfeel;
If using a metal filter, the coffee will have a richer mouthfeel, stronger aroma, and lower acidity. Different models of metal filters have varying numbers of mesh holes, so additional consideration should be given when choosing a metal filter.
FrontStreet Coffee's Recommended Brewing Parameters
Example: Natural-Processed Ethiopia Sidamo 90+ Guji
Parameters: 15 grams of coffee beans, grind size 5R (58% pass-through rate on China's standard #20 sieve), water temperature 89°C, 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio.
Method: Pour 15 grams of coffee grounds, add 40g of water and stir well (because the chamber is narrow, coffee grounds may remain at the edges, so using a bit more water ensures all coffee grounds in the corners can fully absorb water), after 30 seconds add water to 227g, stir again to help the coffee grounds continue to release gas, flip over and press at around 1:30 seconds, pressing takes about 30 seconds. If the taste seems too strong, you can dilute it with water.
Flavor: Noticeable sweetness, gentle citrus acidity, with almond, nut, and caramel notes in the aftertaste, high clarity, sweet spices lingering in the mouth, and a citrus tea-like sensation.
