New to Pour-Over Coffee? Here's What to Do

What should you do if you have no concept of pour-over coffee but still want to drink coffee?

Why not try drip bag coffee? It's convenient, quick, and simple.

But don't think that pour-over drip bag coffee is as simple as just pouring hot water in. In fact, water temperature and coffee-to-water ratio are key. Don't overthink drip bag coffee as being too simple - just continuously adding hot water until it flows out to become a cup of coffee. Hmm, the flavor brewed this way can only be described as a sour, light-tasting herbal medicine.

Actually, the brewing method for pour-over drip bag coffee is very simple. FrontStreet Coffee recommends the following brewing steps for drip bag coffee:

Brewing Steps

1. Tear open the sealing strip at the top of the filter bag

2. Pull it open and hang it on the cup rim

3. Brewing: First soak for 20-30 seconds, then add water in segments

4. Remove and discard the filter bag

Water Temperature and Amount

As for water temperature and amount? FrontStreet Coffee recommends a water temperature of 88-92°C, with a suggested water amount of 180-220cc. One bag contains 10 grams, which is equivalent to a 1:16-1:20 water ratio, much higher than the commonly used 1:13-15. The brewing method is actually very similar to pour-over coffee.

First, use 20 grams of water to wet the coffee grounds and let it sit for 30 seconds.

Then add water in segments, filling it to near the top. Wait for the water to finish flowing through, then add more water. Repeat this process about 3-4 times to complete.

Because the grounds are fine and the mesh bag has small pores, the flow rate will be slower, especially during the second and third water additions, when the water flow rate in the final stages becomes very slow.

Fine grounds and fine mesh can achieve higher extraction, perhaps allowing for a higher water-to-coffee ratio.

After brewing, simply pinch the paper on both sides of the drip bag to remove it - your fingers won't get wet at all, very convenient.
