Costa Rica Turrialba: Coffee Paradise in Volcanic Soil
The volcanic soil of Turrialba in Costa Rica is extremely fertile and well-drained. Costa Rica was the first country in Central America to grow coffee and bananas for commercial purposes. Coffee and bananas are the country's main export commodities. In 1729, coffee was introduced to Costa Rica from Cuba. Today, its coffee industry is one of the most well-organized in the world, with yields reaching up to 1,700 kilograms per hectare. Costa Rica has a population of only 3.5 million, but boasts more than 400 million coffee trees, with coffee exports accounting for 25% of the country's total export value. Costa Rica also benefits from the Central American Agricultural Research Institute (IAAC) located in Turrialba, which serves as an important international research center.
Geographic Distribution and Growing Conditions
The seven main coffee growing regions are distributed from northwest to southeast along the inland central highlands.
The fertile volcanic ash of Costa Rica's volcanic terrain, along with its moderate and suitable temperatures, and stable and abundant rainfall, are all factors that contribute to coffee becoming one of Costa Rica's main agricultural products.
Coffee Industry Heritage
Since Costa Rica's coffee industry began developing after the mid-18th century, it was the first country in Central America to cultivate coffee, boasting a long history. Consequently, the coffee organization has a complete system from production to sales. In terms of both quality and quantity, Costa Rican coffee has consistently received worldwide recognition and has been rated as world-class high-quality coffee.
Coffee Characteristics
All coffee beans from Costa Rica are of the Arabica variety. They offer pure flavor and pleasant aroma, possessing impeccable balance in both acidity and mouthfeel. They are suitable as single-origin coffee and can also be blended to create premium coffee blends.
