Peru's Coffee Heritage

Peru began exporting coffee in 1887 and is now the eighth-largest coffee-producing country in the world, as well as the largest exporter of organic coffee. With an annual output of 2 million bags, coffee accounts for 5% of total exports. More than one-third of the nation's coffee is grown in the Cajamarca region in the north, as well as in the southern regions of Apurímac and Cusco. The farms are primarily operated by small farmers with an average size not exceeding 5 hectares. The most common varieties include Bourbon, Typica, Pache, and Caturra.

Fair Trade and Small Farmers

More than 11 million people in Peru are engaged in agriculture-related work, with the vast majority being small farmers operating independently. Due to the long distances between cities and high transportation costs, organizations formed by small farmers play a particularly important role. In 2005, Fairtrade International established a presence in Peru, helping Peruvian farmers enter the fair trade system and access international markets. Currently, more than 110 cooperatives have obtained fair trade certification.

The Impact of Fair Trade

Fair trade emphasizes fair treatment throughout the entire supply chain—from consumers, traders, distributors, to producers. Therefore, obtaining fair trade certification requires compliance with certain standards, such as ensuring farmers have reasonable incomes and implementing environmentally friendly practices.

Environmental Conservation

In the past, the most direct way for farmers to increase income was to continuously develop rainforests and expand cultivation areas. As a result, the Amazon rainforest has lost 750,000 square kilometers since the 1970s due to unregulated development.

In recent years, environmental protection has gained increasing attention. How to enable tropical rainforests and local farmers to coexist and thrive has become an important global issue. Growing coffee trees under the shade of existing forests without clearing native vegetation has become one of the sustainable approaches. In Peru, more than half of all coffee trees are now grown under shade. This practice not only preserves the rainforest but also enhances coffee quality.

Peru's Organic Success

According to relevant reports from the Public Television Service's News Issues Center, the path for Peruvian small farmers has become increasingly broad, making Peru the world's largest producer of organic coffee, with export values exceeding $200 million USD. The Peruvian government also deeply understands that organic agriculture is beneficial for both others and themselves. In addition to encouraging small farmers to form associations or cooperatives, they have also planned related supporting measures to make Peru the fifth-largest exporter of organic agricultural products.
