The Mierisch Family Legacy
The Mierisch family of Nicaragua has been cultivating coffee since 1908, with a history spanning over 100 years. In the past 15 years, the family's investments in coffee equipment, processing technology, and personnel training have led to significant growth in their micro-batch coffee beans. These improvements are the result of the entire family's efforts and the tireless dedication of each member. Under the Mierisch family's leadership, their farms have won multiple C.O.E. (Cup of Excellence) awards.
The Mierisch family owns a total of 9 farms: 8 located in Nicaragua—San Jose, Limoncillo, Escondida, Milagros, Placeres, Los Altos, Mama Mina, and Suspiro—and one in Honduras called Cerro Azul.
Java Nica: A Revived Variety
Java Nica is a Java variety successfully revived in Nicaragua by Erwin Mierisch, the current CEO of the Mierisch family, and his father Esteban Mierisch. The story began when they were traveling on the road to Juanetillo in Nicaragua and passed by a coffee organization: UNICAFE's coffee experimental station. They saw a man standing by the roadside, discarding old shovels and coffee seeds. Esteban bought about 20 pounds of seeds that the man was about to throw away and took them back to consult with their agronomist. The agronomist explained that this was a rare variety that was not widely cultivated because it was difficult to grow due to poor disease resistance and low yields, but it was an excellent variety well worth planting. In 2008, the Mierisch family successfully harvested about eight bags of Javanica. Today, they cultivate it on their family farms including San Jose, Milagros, and Limoncillo, but the current annual production is only about 200 bags.
Java Nica beans are relatively slender, belonging to the early Ethiopian LONGBERRY variety and are genetically related to Typica. Currently, few people are familiar with this variety. The coffee flavor features floral notes, lemon, candy, and good balance—a very special JAVANICA variety with African characteristics.
LOS FAVORITOS Competition
The LOS FAVORITOS auction, which began in 2013, is a bidding activity for the Mierisch family's farms. Each year, they select the most outstanding batches from different farms, featuring various processing methods and varieties, for auction.
