The Hummingfish Foundation: Supporting East Timor Coffee Farmers

The Hummingfish Foundation (Hummingfish) is a charitable organization registered in Hong Kong. Its founder, Daniel Groshong, was formerly a war photographer who lived in East Timor for two years, capturing the stunning natural landscapes of East Timor and compiling them into the small nation's first photography series. Hummingfish has been dedicated to helping East Timor coffee farmers produce coffee through natural methods and develop green enterprises. MMC is a key project aimed at improving the lives of local coffee farmers and protecting the local natural environment.

Overcoming Geographic and Infrastructure Challenges

The emergence of the Hummingfish Foundation has changed this situation. The original mountainous areas are located in remote regions, nearly 6 hours' drive from the capital Dili. Additionally, local infrastructure remains relatively underdeveloped, so not many coffee merchants are willing to travel to these areas to purchase coffee beans from local farmers. The local farmers have no choice but to gather together to transport their coffee to urban areas or sell them at nearby markets.

Quality Processing and Fair Compensation

They teach farmers cultivation techniques, collecting only premium coffee beans and settling payments daily by weight. After settlement, they carry out a series of processes, from washing beans to drying them, from drying to packaging and transportation—all handled with meticulous care.

Market Access and Community Development

After repackaging, the coffee beans can be sold at higher prices to coffee shops in East Timor and even overseas. All revenue is returned to the local farmers to continue supporting local development.

Organic Arabica Excellence

East Timor highland coffee beans belong to the Arabica species. They are cultivated organically,坚持不用化学肥料,不施洒农药除草剂的自然食品,吸收大自然本身所蕴藏的养分,所种出来的咖啡是无污染的上等质优咖啡。absorbing the nutrients inherent in nature itself, producing pollution-free, high-quality premium coffee.

Brewing Recommendations

FrontStreet Coffee suggests using water at 89-90°C to brew East Timor coffee.
