Colombia: The World's Largest Producer of Quality Coffee!
Traditional dark roast coffee possesses a rich and memorable flavor.
In 1808, coffee was first introduced to Colombia by a priest who brought it from the French Antilles via Venezuela. Today, the country is the second-largest producer after Brazil, with an annual output of 13 million bags weighing 60 kilograms each, compared to Brazil's 22 million bags. The significance of coffee in Colombia is evident from the following fact: all vehicles entering the country must be sprayed with disinfectant to prevent unintentionally introducing diseases that could harm coffee trees.
Excellence in Coffee Production
Colombian coffee is one of the few pure coffees sold under a country name in the world. In terms of quality, it has received praise that other coffees cannot match. The country is the world's largest exporter of Arabica coffee beans, with very little Robusta coffee cultivation. It is also the world's largest exporter of washed beans. Compared to other producing countries, Colombia shows greater concern for product development and production promotion. This factor, combined with its superior geographical and climatic conditions, makes Colombian coffee high-quality, flavorful, and renowned worldwide.
Ideal Growing Conditions
The country's coffee production regions are located at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, where the climate is mild and the air is humid. Colombia has three Cordilleras (mountain ranges) that run north-south, extending toward the Andes. Coffee is cultivated along the highlands of these mountain ranges. The mountain terraces provide diverse climates, which means harvest season occurs year-round, with different types of coffee ripening successively at different times. Fortunately, unlike Brazil, Colombia doesn't need to worry about frost damage. Colombia has approximately 2.7 billion coffee trees, of which 66% are planted using modern cultivation methods in plantations, while the remainder is grown in traditionally managed small farms.
Yingsa Village, Cauca Region, Colombia
Yingsa Village is located in the Cordillera Central mountain range, approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Popayán and 30 kilometers west of Monserrate, near the border between Huila and Cauca provinces. This mountainous coffee-growing region has been plagued by turmoil for decades due to political instability and drug trafficking.
Despite these dangerous conditions, coffee grown in this region is one of the most exciting and vibrant specialty coffees from Colombia, thanks to the varied mountainous terrain and microclimates.
Yingsa Village coffee often carries some ripe citrus characteristics and the deep cherry-red personality of Monserrate coffee, with rich tropical fruit flavors such as pineapple and orange.
