About La Esmeralda Estate
La Esmeralda Estate is a historic plantation owned by the Peterson family. It began in 1996 when the Peterson family purchased a coffee farm located in the Boquete, Jaramillo region. This coffee farm has an altitude of approximately 1450-1700 meters, and its coffee is renowned for its elegant citrus aroma.
The various generations of owners have cultivated numerous coffee varieties. After the Peterson family took over this farm, they expanded the planting area by 60 hectares, with some parts previously used for dairy farming. After several extensive renovations of the entire farm, many of the later coffee cultivation blocks began to be harvested gradually in 2003-2004. In 2002, Daniel Peterson, the son of the Peterson family, proposed a new idea, believing that not all coffee from the regions would have similar excellent flavors, but that several regions had particularly distinctive tastes. Thus, he began cupping all the coffee beans from the entire estate. La Esmeralda coffee beans became popular worldwide, and in 2004 at the Panama International "Best of Panama" competition, they set a record high price, making them a dark horse in the coffee market.
The Boquete Region
Within the Boquete growing region, there are also many excellent estates. Besides the famous La Esmeralda Estate, there are also renowned estates such as Elida Estate and Akaba Estate, all producing high-quality specialty coffees. This is not only due to Panama's superior ecological conditions in the Boquete region and the fertile volcanic ash soil of the Baru Volcano. Another important factor is the unique microclimate of the highlands in Boquete, which is a unique resource for specialty coffee in the Boquete region; this is caused by Panama's east-to-west environment allowing cold air currents to converge in the central mountains above 6500 feet, thereby creating multiple microclimates in the Boquete area. These conditions make the temperature and rainfall extremely suitable for plant growth, so coffee trees planted here grow exceptionally well.
