A Moka pot is divided into three main parts: the upper chamber, the coffee basket, and the lower chamber.

Moka Pot Components

01 Coffee Outlet (Extraction Port)

This is where the extracted coffee flows out. Some models feature a pressure valve at the extraction port. These pots generate higher extraction pressure than other Moka pots, allowing them to extract richer coffee oils. For Moka pots with pressure valves, when separating the upper chamber from the lower chamber, you need to gently lift the pressure valve to release internal pressure.

02 Rubber Gasket

The rubber gasket surrounding the filter disk helps maintain the high pressure inside the Moka pot. With frequent use, the rubber gasket will gradually deform due to constant thermal expansion and contraction. Additionally, if you remove the rubber gasket every time during cleaning, it will cause faster stretching of the gasket. Therefore, if extraction doesn't proceed smoothly or if steam and coffee leak, first check whether the rubber gasket is functioning properly. The Moka pot should be cleaned after use, but you don't need to remove the rubber gasket every time. The rubber gasket is a consumable item and needs to be replaced when worn out.

04 Pressure Valve

A safety device that prevents the internal pressure of the Moka pot from exceeding a certain range.

Moka Pot Usage Method

1. Add Hot Water

Pour hot water into the Moka pot, being careful not to exceed the level of the safety valve in the lower chamber. Otherwise, pressure cannot be effectively regulated, and steam will be ejected when heated.

2. Grind Coffee Beans

Recommended grind level - 2. It's recommended to use darker roasted coffee beans, such as FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Queen Estate Sun-Dried Yellow Bourbon and FrontStreet Coffee's PWN Golden Mandheling.

3. Fill the Coffee Basket

Place the coffee grounds into the funnel. Do not tamp the coffee grounds when filling, and let the grounds slightly exceed the edge of the funnel, then level off the excess (this follows the same principle as dosing for semi-automatic espresso machines, but no tamping is required).

4. Note on Coffee Amount

If the amount of coffee grounds exceeds the recommended quantity, extraction cannot proceed smoothly, and the coffee will produce much fine sediment.

5. Place the Funnel

Place the funnel into the lower chamber.

6. Secure the Upper Chamber

Tighten the upper chamber.

7. Heat on Stove

Place the Moka pot on a gas stove and cook over medium heat until the coffee boils up. Keep the lid open during this time. If the diameter of the Moka pot's base is smaller than the gas stove, you'll need to place a trivet on the stove.

8. Listen for Extraction

When the pot makes a "hissing" sound, the coffee oils begin to be extracted.

9. Complete Extraction

Immediately cover the pot, turn off the heat, and wait until extraction is complete.

10. Serve

Pour the Moka pot coffee into a coffee cup, being careful of the hot handle.

Tips

About Grind Size

If the coffee grounds are too fine, the extracted coffee won't rise to the extraction port when starting the Moka pot, but will instead seep directly from between the upper and lower chambers. The grind size for Moka pots should be finer than pour-over coffee but coarser than espresso.
