Colombian Coffee Quality Evolution
Colombian coffee has long shed its image as inferior or base coffee. In recent years, through competitions, people have come to better understand Colombian coffee. Smaller, rounder, and more complete coffee beans represent the mainstream of Colombian coffee, such as those from the Nariño region and Oporapa in the Huila province. Coffee produced by large coffee farms is primarily for commercial use, while coffee from small farms with limited production area lacks earthy flavors, offering absolute balance and gentleness. The pure, sweet taste and aroma have continuously attracted people's palates, bringing coffee enthusiasts unlimited surprises.
Nariño Coffee Excellence
This Nariño coffee is managed and operated by the renowned La Minita estate in the specialty coffee industry, applying the same standards of quality control procedures. It is cultivated in the high-altitude mountainous region of Nariño, Colombia, at over 6,000 feet above sea level. After harvesting, the coffee cherries are meticulously processed at the "Reserva del Patron" processing plant.
The processing methods at "Reserva del Patron" are quite refined. They don't accept the earliest or latest harvested coffee cherries of the season, selecting only the most mature, plump, and optimally grown cherries. Additionally, every step from washing, screening, drying, and secondary screening is executed with precision. These efforts ultimately manifest in the cup – this coffee features clear and delicate acidity, milky aroma, floral notes, nut fragrance, and a rounded mouthfeel, all superior to other Colombian coffees. Overall, it presents a clean and refreshing flavor profile. This coffee is also designated as the official coffee of the Vatican.
Nariño Region Characteristics
The Nariño region is located on the western coast of Colombia and represents the highest altitude area in the country. Limited by terrain constraints, local coffee farmers operate extremely small-scale operations, manually harvesting ripe coffee cherries. The town of La Union, located near the Galeras volcano, benefits from volcanic geology that provides the region's soil with rich nutrients, establishing Nariño as one of Colombia's premier regions for producing high-quality coffee.
Harvesting Patterns
Colombia, spanning the northern and southern hemispheres, mostly has two harvest periods annually in its various regions. However, Nariño, located further south, has only one harvest during spring and summer each year, resulting in overall production significantly lower than the equally famous southern region of Huila. During non-coffee seasons, small farmers engage in fig processing work.
Colombian Coffee Classification
Colombian coffee is primarily classified by green bean size. 16-18 screen size is called Supremo, 14-16 screen size is Excelso, and smaller than 14 screen size is classified as Usual Good Quality. However, coffee bean size is not the sole determining factor for coffee quality.

Colombian coffee has always been appreciated for its balanced, full-bodied taste and bright, lively fruit acidity. Coffee from the Nariño region is particularly renowned for its intense aroma and sweetness.
