Excellent News: Manlaojiang Organic Coffee Passes International Testing

Today we received the wonderful news everyone has been waiting for: Manlaojiang Organic Coffee Estate - Manzhongtian's 2014-15 coffee green beans have once again passed the international SGS 315-item pesticide residue test with zero residues detected. This marks the third consecutive year that Manlaojiang Coffee has passed this international testing.

International Recognition and Quality Assurance

Building on three organic certifications (EU Organic, US Organic, and China Organic), the SGS 315-item pesticide-free testing affirms and recognizes Manlaojiang green beans as China's highest-standard coffee beans. It also underpins our continued standing as the most preferred coffee company among domestic and international customers over the years.

Sustainable Development Philosophy

Manlaojiang Coffee has always been guided by sustainable development principles, promoting green cultivation to protect primary rainforests and species diversity. Through circular, high-efficiency refined processing, we improve green bean quality while maximizing returns for Manlaojiang farmers.

Exceptional 2014-15 Harvest

Yunnan enjoyed favorable climate conditions in 2014, producing vigorous coffee growth and making 2014-15 a bountiful harvest year. Manlaojiang Coffee adheres to specialty coffee production and processing concepts and practices. Building on our existing batch management and refined washed processing, we also experimented with micro-batches using various processing methods, including natural, yellow honey, and red honey processing.

International Expert Recognition

Mr. Ted Lingle, one of the founders of the specialty coffee authorities SCAA and CQI, visited the Manlaojiang Coffee base in January 2015. He was particularly fond of Manlaojiang's micro-batches and specifically asked to take several samples back to the United States for cupping. The support and recognition of this international authority will serve as the best encouragement for our development and progress in the coming year.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommendation

When people talk about Yunnan coffee, they often mention Yunnan small-bean — and "small bean" is really another name for Arabica. Arabica came to be called small bean mainly because, of the three original coffee species, it produces the smallest fruit. The story goes back to 1904, when the French missionary Tian Deneng brought coffee seeds (Typica) from Vietnam into Yunnan and planted the first coffee tree in Zhugula village, Binchuan County. Yunnan's excellent geography and suitable climate made the cultivation of small-bean coffee a great success. FrontStreet's Yunnan Small Bean comes from the Baoshan region and uses washed processing and a medium roast; brewed, it shows soft nut and chocolate sweetness with a light plum acidity, and at an approachable price it has become many people's first encounter with Yunnan coffee.

To explore the region further, FrontStreet built its own estate in 2013 and planted a batch of Typica trees. Typica was chosen partly because it is one of the oldest coffee varieties, carrying the genes of a pure Arabica with an inherently elegant, clean flavor long recognized as a specialty variety, and partly because the first coffee trees planted in Yunnan were also Typica, brought in by the French missionary — FrontStreet wanted to recover that original taste of place. If FrontStreet's Yunnan Small Bean is the beginner's entry, then FrontStreet's 2013 Typica is the marker of moving deeper into the region. FrontStreet's Yunnan Typica uses only fully ripe, all-red cherries and, after natural processing, is roasted medium for a more balanced cup with brighter sweet-and-sour notes: it carries dark berry tones together with caramel sweetness, chocolate, and a touch of dried apricot, finishing with the aftertaste of black tea. For those who want an even clearer Yunnan flavor, FrontStreet's 2013 Sun-Dried Typica uses the most original, traditional post-harvest method — natural processing — which gives it a heavier body and more pronounced sweet-and-sour character, with citrus and berry tones, a trace of fermented wine aroma, caramel sweetness, and a creamy finish.

To taste Yunnan in an espresso, FrontStreet's Black Cocoa Blend — a combination of Yunnan small bean and Brazilian Cerrado recommended by many baristas — is the pick. The Brazilian coffee supplies the aroma of mixed nuts and a balanced body, while the Yunnan small bean plays the role of chocolate and citrus. Pulled as an Americano, FrontStreet Coffee's Black Cocoa Blend is balanced across sour, sweet, and bitter with the sweet aromas of nuts and brown sugar; as a latte it is smooth and silky with almond and cream, and it is very beginner-friendly.
