The World's Most Expensive Geisha Coffee

How much does the world's most expensive Geisha coffee cost? How expensive is Elida Estate's Geisha? How much does a cup of FrontStreet Coffee's Elida single-origin cost?

Elida Estate is located in the administrative district of Boquete town. After arriving in Boquete, continue along the riverside into the mountains. Estate owner Wilford will arrange for friends to first visit the nursery near his hometown, while introducing Elida's three main varieties. The wooden signs make it very clear: in the middle are newly sprouted coffee seedlings. Wilford is explaining the varieties and timeline to the camera, with his employees in the background (when I visited again in 2012, he was still taking care of the nursery).

Elida's processing station is situated midway between the nursery and the higher elevations of the estate. You could also say it's within the estate but on the outer edge, as it must be accessible for truck transportation. When we arrived, a batch of natural process beans was undergoing daily processing. Nearby was the simple processing facility and storage area for parchment beans. As usual, Wilford couldn't find anyone to open the door (the following year, he was still looking for the keys). The image below shows freshly harvested coffee cherries and honey-processed green beans:

In 2011-2012, Elida's harvest volume, like that of neighboring countries, decreased slightly due to climate impacts, but the quality remained excellent. The reduced production led to slightly higher prices, yet the flavor maintained its characteristic grandeur. In 2012, the flavor profile centered on cherry, honey, and traditional black berry notes, with fruit flavors that received universal acclaim! When describing the estate's freshly picked tree tomatoes and wild berries, one uses the term "umami" as praise. After deeply investigating Elida's finest batches, it truly deserves this recognition.

Elida Estate is located in Panama's western border region - Chiriquí Province (Boquete). The province's Barú Volcano is one of the highest volcanoes in Central America, with fertile volcanic soil providing optimal nutrients for coffee. Barú Volcano is divided into seven different microclimate zones based on altitude and has a national park established to protect it, prohibiting human development and hunting, preserving rare and precious plants, birds, and mammals. Elida Estate covers approximately 65 hectares, with half located within the national park. Only 30% of the estate is planted with coffee trees, while the remainder remains primary forest.

Elida Estate has a very high altitude, with some areas even within Panama's National Park Reserve. The沿途 scenery is beautiful, the air is fresh, and the mountain terrain is rugged. Walking through it feels like a forest bath. Elida Estate is in the administrative district of Boquete town. After arriving in Boquete, continue along the riverside into the mountains. Estate owner Wilford will arrange for friends to first visit the nursery near his hometown while introducing Elida's three main varieties: Catuai, Geisha, and Criollo.

Above the processing station is the path to the coffee gardens, with an altitude exceeding 1,800 meters. The concept of low-temperature resting was actually jointly experimented with by several international friends from the roasters' alliance (referring to Japan's JRN). We found that while green beans from subtropical regions certainly need to be stored at low temperatures, different processing methods and altitude levels also affect the low-temperature resting time. For Panama's Elida, low-temperature resting for more than 5 months allows flavors to develop more balanced and full-bodied.

FrontStreet Coffee Recommended Brewing:

Dripper: Hario V60

Water Temperature: 91-92°C

Grind Size: Fuji grinder setting 3.5

Brewing Method: Water-to-coffee ratio 1:15, 15g coffee grounds. First pour 25g water, steam for 25 seconds. Second pour to 120g, then pause. Wait until the water level in the coffee bed drops to half, then continue pouring slowly until reaching 225g total. Extraction time approximately 2:10.

Analysis: Using three-stage brewing to clearly distinguish the front, middle, and back-end flavors of the coffee. Because the V60 has many ribs and drains quickly, pausing during pouring can extend the extraction time.
