Introduction to Blue Mountain Coffee

Blue Mountain Coffee is the world's most superior coffee. The Blue Mountains are located in eastern Jamaica. When the weather is clear, the sun shines directly on the azure Caribbean Sea, and the peaks reflect the brilliant blue light of the seawater, hence the name. The highest peak of Blue Mountain reaches 2,256 meters, making it the highest peak in the Caribbean region and a famous tourist destination. Located in the coffee belt, this area has fertile volcanic soil, fresh and unpolluted air, and a humid climate with year-round fog and rain. These conditions have created the world-renowned Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, as well as the world's highest-priced coffee.

Blue Mountain Coffee possesses all the characteristics of fine coffee. Not only is it rich and mellow in taste, but due to the perfect combination of coffee's sweetness, acidity, and bitterness, it has no bitterness at all, with only moderate and perfect acidity. It is typically consumed as a single-origin coffee. However, due to its extremely limited production and incredibly high price, coffee shops generally use coffees with similar flavors as substitutes.

Market Distribution

Market Share: Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee has maintained a god-like status in China, with almost every coffee shop claiming to have it. However, very few actually use genuine Blue Mountain beans. According to export statistics from the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board as of 2004, of the limited Blue Mountain Coffee bean quotas, 85% are exported to Japan, 5% to the United States, 5% to Europe, and 5% to other countries. However, in global consumption of authentic Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, China accounts for 15% according to International Coffee Association statistics. This is because some of Jamaica's Blue Mountain Coffee shares from Japan, Australia, and Europe are exported to Taiwan through directly operated branch companies.

The Secret Behind Blue Mountain Coffee's Purity

Their coffee trees all grow on rugged mountain slopes, making the harvesting process extremely difficult. Only skilled local female workers can handle this task. It is crucial to select perfectly ripe coffee beans during harvesting, as underripe or overripe beans will affect the coffee quality. After harvesting, the coffee beans must be hulled on the same day, then fermented for 12-18 hours. Afterward, the coffee beans undergo washing and sorting. The next step is drying, which must be done on concrete floors or thick blankets until the moisture content of the beans drops to 12%-14%. They are then stored in dedicated warehouses. When needed, they are taken out for roasting and then ground into powder. These procedures must be strictly controlled; otherwise, the coffee quality will be affected.

Grades of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

Jamaican Blue Mountain region's coffee has three grades:

  • Blue Mountain Coffee
  • Jamaica High Mountain Supreme Coffee Beans
  • Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans

Both Blue Mountain Coffee and High Mountain Coffee are further divided into two grades each. In terms of quality, from highest to lowest, they are: Blue Mountain No. 1, Blue Mountain No. 2, High Mountain No. 1, High Mountain No. 2, and Jamaica Prime Coffee. Typically, only coffee grown between altitudes of 457 to 1,524 meters can be called Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee grown between altitudes of 274 to 457 meters is usually called Jamaica Prime Coffee Beans, with Blue Mountain Coffee being several times more expensive than High Mountain Coffee.

Authorized Processing Facilities

Among these Blue Mountain Coffee beans entering Taiwan, some are green beans - unprocessed coffee beans, while others are roasted beans processed by four legally authorized processing facilities in Jamaica's Blue Mountain region. However, according to the Coffee Association, the price difference between green and roasted Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee beans is nearly tenfold. This is because Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee beans not only emphasize origin and pedigree but also place great importance on processing methods. If importing green beans, one cannot enjoy the perfect Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee flavor, and it's easy for importers to mix in other coffee beans without supervision during intermediate steps. Improper storage conditions can also ruin top-grade Blue Mountain Coffee.

Certificate of Origin

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee beans exported from Jamaica must be inspected and certified for origin by the Coffee Industry Board before being approved for export. They must also use the Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee trademark registered by the Board in over 20 countries worldwide to be considered authentic Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee beans. The Jamaica Coffee Industry Board stipulates that Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee must be grown in legally designated coffee regions to be considered genuine Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee and be authorized to use the Board's registered trademark: Blue Mountain Coffee.

Growing Conditions

The legally designated growing region for Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is on the eastern side of Jamaica Island, with a total altitude of 7,402 feet. Only at altitudes between 3,000-5,000 feet can Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee with perfect balance and subtle acidity be grown. Only Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee grown in the Blue Mountain region at this altitude is considered 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Coffee grown below 3,000 feet altitude is classified as High Mountain Coffee and is authorized to use the High Mountain Coffee designation. The total production of High Mountain Coffee is five times that of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, with most private estates growing High Mountain Coffee for export and as tourism specialties sold domestically. As for Blue Mountain regions above 5,000 feet altitude, they are covered with dense jungle and unsuitable for any agricultural cultivation.

Quality Control

Just as fine wine emphasizes prestigious chateaus, Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee also values estate origin. The processing quality of famous estates is significantly better than other processing facilities, and they are known as designated estates. In Jamaica's "Coffee Industry Management Regulations," the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board has authorized several major estates with the power to centrally process coffee cherries, export Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee beans, and use the Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee trademark to maintain the reputation and quality of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee.

FrontStreet Coffee's Recommended Brewing Method

  • Dripper: KONO dripper
  • Water Temperature: 88°C
  • Grind Size: Fuji Rukun grind size 4
  • Brewing Method: Water-to-coffee ratio 1:14, 17g coffee grounds, first pour 25g water for 30s bloom, second pour to 238g water, extraction time around 2:30 minutes

Analysis: The KONO dripper has few ribs at the bottom, causing the filter paper to fit tightly against the dripper, which restricts airflow. This allows water and coffee grounds to have longer contact and immersion time in the dripper, ensuring adequate extraction time and extraction rate for coarse grinds. This enables the coffee grounds to be fully extracted, enhancing the rich mouthfeel and making the flavor more concentrated.

Flavor: High balance, clean, rich and solid body, persistent dark chocolate aftertaste.
