What is NINETY PLUS (90+)?
Ninety Plus is an internationally renowned coffee bean production and sales company, known worldwide for providing rare and unique green coffee beans. In addition to direct cooperation with coffee farmers, they also own a 134-hectare coffee estate in Panama. Founded in 2007, their customers have now spread across more than 40 countries worldwide.
90+ Ninety Plus Grading System
90+ beans have a different 100-point scoring system compared to general standards. Green coffee merchants can have their own scoring criteria, while their grades are classified based on three factors: flavor, cost, and yield.
In addition to their own flavor symbols, each 90+ bean also has its own grading method, which of course differs completely from other countries' classifications, divided into the following levels:
L7, L12, L21, L39, L95, L195
L stands for Level, and the classification is based on production quantity, processing refinement, difficulty, and screening strictness.
Level 7:
Single-origin harvest. Rare varieties with delicate flavors and special characteristics are hand-selected, then processed through Ninety Plus's unique methods to achieve standards exceeding ninety-plus quality.
Level 12:
Single-origin harvest. The website uses negative adjectives like "unmistakable and indelible" to indicate that this grade of beans offers an unforgettable good taste for every coffee enthusiast.
Level 21 (L21), Level 39 (L39):
Most of these are Gesha varieties grown at Ninety Plus's Panama estate. Special Red processed Ethiopian Nekisse Red also belongs to Level 39 (L39).
Level 95 (L95), Level 195 (L195):
These are beans from premium microenvironments in the Panama estate, processed through patented drying technology after lengthy screening processes. They achieve the highest taste standards in the design. Most are also processed under the personal care of founder Joseph. Annual production may only reach ten to several tens of kilograms. These are considered collectibles.
L7, L12 Range:
Most Ethiopian beans fall into this grade, with flavors already excellent, impeccable in both aroma and texture. This grade of 90+ can be considered entry-level but offers excellent value for money.
For example: Tchembe and Kemgin were originally L7, while Nekisse and Hachira were originally L12.
L21, L39 Range:
This is almost exclusively the domain of Geisha coffee from the NPGE estate. It's conceivable that for 90+, the Geisha variety itself represents high quality, so the lowest grade is L21. One can also reason that Geisha care might be more demanding, and processing rigor is higher than for Ethiopian beans. Additionally, specially processed Ethiopian beans can be upgraded to this range, becoming comparable to Geisha.
For example: Lycello is L21, Juliette and Perci are L39 - all three are Geishas from the NPGE estate; Nekisse Red (Red-processed Ethiopian Nekisse) was upgraded to the original L39.
L95, L195 Range:
These two grades must undergo 90+ special processing methods to reach exceptional quality, such as Red (Red processing), Ruby (Ruby processing), and SK (Solkiln processing), which can be considered exclusive processing methods for 90+. However, to reach the highest L195 grade, Geisha is still required.
For example: Lotus (SK processing), Silvia (SK processing), Semeon Abay (this is from the Master Series), and Nekisse Ruby (Ruby-processed Ethiopian beans) are all L95, while Perci Ruby is currently the only L195 (Ruby processing + Geisha variety).
The 2017 new harvest season products may cancel the original L grading system (original L7\L12\L39\L139), and product and product line divisions will be based on more significant taste differences. The product lines are divided into four major series: NinetyPlus Ethiopia, NinetyPlus Panama, Ninety Levelup, and NinetyPlus Limited.
FrontStreet Coffee's 90+ Representative
FrontStreet Coffee also features a representative product from 90+ company: Zhumang, roasted to medium-light roast, brewed with 90°C water for about two minutes, featuring special floral notes and excellent nectarine and tropical fruit flavors, along with oak barrel aromas.
What is Zhumang LEVEL UP 90+?
Ethiopian heirloom varieties grown in the fertile soil at altitudes of 1750-2000 meters, combined with suitable temperatures and adequate rainfall, have allowed Sidamo to exceed expectations for natural processed beans. Natural processed beans typically have better sweetness but lack the clean brightness of washed beans. However, Zhumang coffee, beyond the inherent quality of the beans themselves, owes its excellence entirely to proper post-harvest processing, constant temperature and humidity warehouse sanitation, and appropriate roasting.
90+ beans differ from specialty beans in naming, starting from flavor concepts. Zhumang means "Best approach" locally, inheriting the charming aroma of traditional natural processing with round, full, rich fruit flavors. Generally, natural processed beans rarely achieve clean and bright taste, but Zhumang possesses the bright acidity of washed beans and the rich body of natural processed beans, with floral and fruit flavors intertwined, creating a complex aftertaste.
