FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe is certainly no stranger to everyone, but do you truly understand it comprehensively?

Origins and Geography

FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe is a small town in Ethiopia, situated at an altitude of 1700-2100 meters, located on the northwest side of the Sidamo Province.

It was originally a sub-producing area within Ethiopia's Sidamo region but was separated due to its distinctive flavor characteristics. Today, it stands as one of the world's highest-altitude coffee-producing regions and has become synonymous with Ethiopian specialty coffee.

Yirgacheffe is nestled by mountains and lakes, and has been a wetland since ancient times. "Yirga" means "to settle down," while "Cheffe" means "wetland."

Characteristics

Although FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe coffee beans are small in size, they possess a gentle and refined beauty, with a delightful sweetness. After light roasting, they exhibit unique lemon, floral, and honey-like sweet aromas, along with soft fruit acidity and citrus flavors, creating a fresh and bright taste profile.

Even without milk or sugar, the rich texture and unique soft floral notes will sweep across your taste buds, leaving an endless aftertaste.

Cultivation

Initially, the coffee trees of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe were cultivated by European monks, later transitioning to being managed by farmers or cooperatives. Coffee trees are mostly planted in farmers' own backyards or intercropped with other agricultural crops. Each household's production is limited, making it typical pastoral coffee.

Lakes Turkana, Abaya, and Chamo bring abundant water vapor to this region. In the rift valleys, represented by the Misty Valley, fog prevails year-round, creating a spring-like climate with gentle breezes, coolness, and humidity.

Thousands of coffee tree varieties thrive and multiply here, nurturing Yirgacheffe's unique floral and fruity characteristics, as well as its ever-changing terroir expressions.

Flavor Profile

The so-called "Yirgacheffe flavor" refers to intense jasmine flower aromas, lemon, as well as peach and almond sweet notes, and tea-like fragrances.

"Coffee enters the mouth, and a hundred flowers bloom" is the most fitting description for FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe. Its flavor profile is reminiscent of the pleasant sensation of flowers touching the taste buds and olfactory receptors in the nasal cavity.

Beyond the floral notes, the delicate body feels like silk massaging in the mouth, creating a wonderful tactile sensation.

Grading System

Ethiopian coffee's grading system is not determined by bean size but rather by the proportion of defective beans in the green coffee.

Ethiopia has implemented the ECX (Ethiopia Commodity Exchange) specialty coffee trading grading system, where Q-Graders make the following gradings through green coffee evaluation:

FrontStreet Coffee's washed Yirgacheffe coffee beans are divided into Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels;

FrontStreet Coffee's natural Yirgacheffe is divided into Grade 1, Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5.

Grade 1 represents the highest level, with the lowest defect rate and the most excellent quality Yirgacheffe.

Coffee beans are a type of plant fruit, and simultaneously, they are also an agricultural crop.

The existence of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe better illustrates the attribute of coffee as a fruit.

Yirgacheffe Coffee Bean Brand Recommendations
