Yemen Mocha: The Historical Journey of Coffee
Yemen Mocha (YEMEN MOCHA) - while botanical research traces coffee's origins to Ethiopia, from a cultural perspective, the event that introduced coffee as a beverage to the European world occurred in Arab Yemen. From that time onward, mentioning coffee meant mentioning Yemen, which in turn meant Mocha.
Mocha is a commercial port, much like how Brazilian coffee was exported through the port of Santos, hence using Santos to refer to Brazilian coffee. Similarly, the coffee-exporting port of Mocha became the collective name for Yemeni coffee.
Yemen is completely different from other coffee-producing countries. Lacking water, with an arid climate and barren land, the coffee varieties that survived in Yemen differ from the meticulously cultivated varieties of other major coffee nations.

Its consumption led to the birth of coffeehouses, Yemen's new export, and even served as a powerful stimulant for praying Muslim monks. However, the effects weren't always positive, as Yemen coffee also became the first to face controversial bans, the devastation of war, and even inspired robbery and espionage.
Yemen's Global Coffee Legacy
Yemen coffee's tremendous contribution to world history is best told through its iconic port town of Al-Makha. Under the protection of the Ottoman Empire, Yemen carefully adjusted and meticulously protected their precious caffeinated commodity. Unwilling to sell living coffee plants or seeds, they established a global monopoly on coffee trade centered around this sleepy port. Yemen monopolized the world coffee trade for 200 years, shipping vast quantities of sterile beans from the port of Al Mokha.
Even as the rest of the world eventually caught up with Yemen in coffee cultivation and production, Yemen still maintains an impressive reputation in the specialty coffee world. With a wild and unique flavor profile, its beans remain distinctive and continue to attract drinkers.
Traditional Cultivation Methods
On high-altitude agricultural terraces carved into mountainsides, farmers carefully craft coffee with intimate flavors passed down through generations. Whether planting seeds in ash to reduce moisture before planting, burning weeds on Saturdays to kill insects, or using local livestock to provide organic fertilizer, you'll notice the absence of chemicals and an abundance of hands-on care and precision.
Yemen Coffee Varieties
Yemen coffee varieties are complex, so they are generally named by their origin, such as Mattari, Sanani, Ismaeili, Hirazi, etc. The formal name is typically prefixed with Yemen Mocha, for example, YEMEN MOCHA MATTARI.
